Season opener looms as striker departures unsettle Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid head into pre-season with their striker situation at the centre of growing concern ahead of the La Liga opener on August 19. Julian Alvarez has made clear he wants to leave, Alexander Sorloth appears unlikely to remain, and Antoine Griezmann’s exit to Orlando City has already removed a veteran goal source. The result is a forward line that risks arriving to the new season thin and untested.

Alvarez’s desire to move has forced the club into reactive mode, shortening the window to find and register an adequate replacement. Atletico must now balance sporting needs with LaLiga financial constraints while scrambling for solutions. How the club handles the next weeks will determine whether they begin the campaign structurally disadvantaged.

Alvarez and Sorloth departures reshape goal profile

Losing Alvarez and potentially Sorloth removes a combined layer of goals and physical presence from Atletico’s attack. Those departures create a meaningful shortfall in finishing options that the coaching staff will struggle to fill with the same reliability. The club’s task is not simply to sign scorers but to find players who can handle the pressure of leading Diego Simeone’s system.

Sorloth’s future looks increasingly likely to be away from Madrid, with interest reported from clubs in Italy and Turkey. His potential exit complicates transfer planning, particularly if Atletico hopes to use outgoing moves as leverage to balance deals. The uncertainty around both forwards compresses the club’s negotiating timeframe.

Internal alternatives offer limited confidence

Within the squad, options to cover the goals gap are thin and unproven for a full LaLiga campaign. Simeone has experimented with Ademola Lookman in a more central role during the run-in and preseason, but Lookman’s strongest attributes remain wide play and transition, not the sustained central finishing required. Promoting young forwards such as Arnau Ortí and Miguel Cubo has merit for development, but their readiness for top-flight pressure this season is uncertain.

Relying on tactical tweaks to redistribute goals away from a central striker would mark a significant departure from Simeone-era norms. Historically, his teams have been built around a reliable central scorer, and shifting that philosophy mid-summer risks diluting the identity that has delivered past success. Any internal plan will carry a high degree of risk until proven in competitive fixtures.

Transfer market targets bring quality and caveats

Atletico’s scouting has linked a range of names to the club, but each target presents its own questions. Dusan Vlahovic, available after leaving Juventus, fits the profile of a seasoned central striker at a relatively modest cost, but his recent form has been inconsistent. Signing a player like Vlahovic would be a bet on recapturing previous peak levels rather than a guaranteed fix.

Viktor Gyokeres has also emerged in discussions as a forward capable of scoring in volume at Sporting CP, yet concerns persist about whether his temperament and consistency would hold up in LaLiga’s spotlight. Other names have circulated in reports as contingency options, but financial constraints and squad fit mean Atletico’s recruitment team must be selective. Every potential arrival will be judged not only on goalscoring ability but on reliability under pressure.

Club hierarchy and decision-making under scrutiny

The handling of the striker situation has exposed tensions in the club’s summer operations and raised questions about who is driving transfers. Diego Simeone’s reduced presence while spending time abroad, public comments from president Enrique Cerezo and executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin, and the role of sporting director Mateu Alemany have all been scrutinised by supporters. The lack of a decisive, coordinated narrative has complicated negotiations and allowed the window to narrow.

Delays in resolving outgoing deals related to wages and registration have further limited Atletico’s room for manoeuvre. Each additional week without clarity reduces the pool of attainable targets and increases the likelihood of compromise signings. For a club operating under strict financial guidelines, timeliness and unity in the boardroom are as important as scouting.

Historical precedent highlights importance of a central finisher

Simeone’s strongest Atletico sides were consistently anchored by a striker capable of winning matches independently, from Falcao to Diego Costa and Luis Suarez. Those periods showed how a dominant central forward creates tactical balance and allows the rest of the team to fulfil complementary roles. Without a comparable presence in place, Atletico risks entering the season with a plan that lacks the decisive edge those teams possessed.

The upcoming high-profile friendlies against Manchester United, Manchester City and Marseille will offer clues about how Simeone intends to compensate if no new striker arrives. Those fixtures will test whether tactical adjustments can bridge the gap or whether new recruitment is essential. Results and performances in those matches will shape expectations for the competitive opener.

The next three weeks are pivotal: Atletico must convert interest into arrivals or accept a season beginning without a proven central scorer. Time for negotiation and registration is finite and the club’s choices now will echo through the campaign.

Atletico Madrid face a critical period to resolve their striker situation before competitive football resumes.
