Summary of arrest and charges

A man has been detained in connection with the Mestalla disturbances that erupted shortly before Valencia faced Barcelona on May 23, 2026. Police sources say the suspect was taken into custody on Thursday morning as the presiding investigation identified him as an active instigator of public disorder.

Authorities have charged the individual with alleged public order offences and attacking officers of the law, and the investigation remains open. Officials have not ruled out additional detentions as inquiries proceed.

Sequence of the unrest on Avenida de Suecia

The disturbances began moments after the Valencia team bus passed along Avenida de Suecia en route to Mestalla, where large groups of supporters had gathered. Witnesses and police accounts describe fans setting off pyrotechnics and pelting officers with street furniture and glass bottles, triggering disorder outside the stadium.

Confrontations led to running, pushing and several falls among spectators, according to the police summary of events. The deployment of projectiles and incendiary devices is cited as the primary factor that transformed a pre-match crowd into a volatile scene.

Police response and officer injuries

Officers deployed to restore order report being deliberately targeted during the clashes, with at least one agent suffering a wound to the arm after being struck by a thrown bottle. The force described attempts by members of the crowd to overwhelm the policing line, which prompted a focused effort to identify and separate those responsible.

Police say the arrested man was among the most active participants, openly defying orders and urging others to confront officers. The authorities emphasized that the physical safety of both police and the general public was seriously jeopardized by the actions of the crowd.

Investigation led by Provincial Intelligence Brigade

The Provincial Brigade of Information has taken charge of the probe, carrying out evidence-gathering and identification work following the incidents. Investigators reviewed footage and witness statements to single out individuals who played a leading role in the disturbances.

Searches and inquiries culminated in the detention of the suspect on suspicion of public disorder and assaulting authorities, with the inquiry still active. Prosecutors and police said they continue to examine photographic and video records to determine whether further charges or arrests are warranted.

Suspect’s prior sanctions under Spain’s sports violence law

Police reports indicate the detained man had prior sanctions under Spain’s Law 19/2007, which targets violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport. Officials noted those earlier penalties factored into the decision to prioritize his identification and detention during the investigation.

Authorities have not disclosed full details of the previous sanctions, but said they showed a pattern of conduct contrary to the norms established by the anti-violence legislation. That legislative framework allows for administrative and criminal measures designed to curb repeat offending among those who commit disorder at sporting events.

Match outcome and broader implications for fans and clubs

The clash occurred ahead of LaLiga’s 38th matchday fixture, the final round of the domestic season, which ended with a 3-1 victory for the home side at Mestalla. Club officials and league authorities commonly review incidents surrounding fixtures, and large-scale disturbances can prompt sanctions, stadium measures or restrictions on fans.

Local authorities and both clubs will likely engage in discussions about stewarding, policing and access control after the episode. The incident has reignited debate about fan behaviour at high-profile matches and the balance between passionate support and public safety.

The police have stressed that the inquiry remains ongoing and that their priority is to secure evidence and hold accountable those who endangered people and property. As investigators continue to process footage and statements, they say they will pursue further action as required by the evidence.
