Camavinga to Manchester United: Old Trafford held talks over Real Madrid midfielder amid fitness concerns

Manchester United have held internal discussions about a potential move for Eduardo Camavinga, exploring whether the Real Madrid midfielder could strengthen their engine room this summer.

Eduardo Camavinga to Manchester United has emerged as a topic of interest after transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that United examined the French international as they weigh midfield options. The discussions come as the Red Devils continue rebuilding their midfield following recent signings and targeted recruitment efforts.

United opened internal talks over Camavinga

Manchester United conducted internal conversations about the possibility of signing Eduardo Camavinga, according to reports attributed to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The club is assessing the 23-year-old’s availability and suitability as it plans further additions to its central midfield.

Those internal reviews are preliminary rather than a formal bid, with United still balancing other recruitment priorities and financial considerations. Sources say the discussions focused on understanding Camavinga’s contract status, fitness record and potential role at Old Trafford.

Camavinga’s injury history and playing time at Real Madrid

Camavinga has enjoyed team success at Real Madrid but has struggled with recurring fitness problems that limited his availability over recent seasons. He missed more than 50 matches across the past three campaigns and managed only a limited number of starts last term.

That intermittent involvement contributed to a reduced statistical output, and it coincided with Camavinga being left off France’s World Cup selection. Real Madrid and the player have monitored his recovery periods closely as they manage his minutes across competitions.

How Camavinga would fit United’s midfield profile

United view Camavinga as a left-footed defensive midfielder who can also operate box-to-box and provide cover at left-back when required. His blend of pace, ball-carrying ability and range of passing offers a modern profile for a holding midfielder capable of progressing possession.

Tactically, Camavinga’s capacity to drive from midfield and thread long passes would provide variety to United’s buildup play. His adaptability would allow a manager to switch between a single pivot and a double pivot without making wholesale changes to the squad.

Other midfield targets and recent United signings

Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield earlier this window by acquiring Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, signaling intent to refresh the area. In addition to Camavinga, the club has reportedly identified AS Roma’s Manu Kone as a concrete target and held talks with the player’s representatives.

Those parallel tracks suggest United are pursuing multiple profiles to improve depth and competition in central midfield. The recruitment strategy appears focused on mixing experienced options with younger, dynamic midfielders who can adapt to Premier League demands.

Contract, valuation and obstacles to a move

Camavinga is contracted to Real Madrid through 2029, which considerably complicates any bid and reduces the likelihood of an inexpensive transfer. Market valuations have placed him in a bracket around £40–45 million, but Real Madrid’s negotiating position and the player’s contract length could push that figure higher.

Beyond the financials, Manchester United must weigh Camavinga’s recent availability record against the premium required to secure him. Sporting directors will also factor in squad balance, wage structure and the manager’s tactical plans before advancing to a formal offer.

Potential upside and long-term projection

When fit, Camavinga brings a high ceiling: technical comfort under pressure, quick recovery runs and the ability to play long, line-splitting passes. Those attributes make him an attractive long-term asset if United believe they can manage his workload and reduce injury risk.

For Manchester United, the proposition is a trade-off between short-term uncertainty and longer-term upside. If medical staff and coaching assess that his physical profile can be stabilized, Camavinga could develop into a central figure in a refreshed midfield core.

United will now decide whether to move from internal interest to a formal approach, while Real Madrid’s willingness to entertain a sale and the player’s own preference remain central to any outcome. The club’s hierarchy must balance recruitment ambition with prudence before committing significant resources.

The coming weeks will show whether Manchester United convert those internal talks into a concrete transfer pursuit or prioritize other midfield targets as they finalize plans for the new season.
