Valencia hold off Derby County 2-1 in closed-door St. George’s Park friendly

Valencia beat Derby County 2-1 in a closed-door friendly at St. George’s Park, with Danjuma scoring both goals to spark confidence in the preseason clash. The Valencia vs Derby County match, played in a special two-period 60-minute format, allowed the squad to rebuild match rhythm ahead of further English fixtures.

Danjuma’s double settles the friendly

Danjuma was the clear standout, netting both Valencia goals and proving decisive in a compact, competitive session. The forward’s return to full-group training came after a spell sidelined by back discomfort, and his finishing gave the coaching staff tangible evidence of regained sharpness.

Derby County, representing the English Championship, supplied a stern workout despite the closed doors, pressing and probing across both 60-minute periods. Valencia managed to control key phases and convert their chances when they appeared.

Closed-door format used to manage minutes

The session was conducted behind closed doors at England’s national training centre and followed a bespoke structure of two 60-minute halves. That format allowed coaches to extend playing time for a broader group while keeping intensity manageable for a mid-preseason date.

Coaches used the extended periods to reproduce competitive load without the full stress of a traditional 90-minute friendly. The approach prioritised conditioning and tactical repetition over spectacle, providing a controlled environment for evaluating player fitness.

Rotation and minutes for a broad group

Valencia rotated heavily, giving meaningful minutes to goalkeepers Vicent Abril and Cristian Rivero and defenders including Gamón, Tárrega, De Haas, Gayà, Monferrer, Wanjala, Diakhaby and Jesús Vázquez. The midfield and forward lines were likewise replenished, with Guido, Dieng, Javi Guerra, Ugrinic, Almeida, Mayol, Rioja, Sato, Otorbi, Raba and Hugo Duro all involved at different stages.

The large-scale involvement reflects a deliberate plan to build collective rhythm and match sharpness across the roster. Staff emphasised the importance of shared minutes after recent mixed results in other preparatory fixtures.

Context of Valencia’s preseason so far

Valencia’s time in England is part of a longer preseason programme aimed at restoring competition tempo and integrating new or returning players. Earlier matches in July included a closed meeting with Petro Luanda, a 3-0 win over Eldense at the training ground, and a 1-2 defeat to Castellón that prompted calls for sharper performance.

The club has arranged its schedule to blend closed training matches with public friendlies, seeking both tactical refinement and practical stress tests ahead of the official competitive calendar. The St. George’s Park stint is intended to accelerate that process.

Injury picture and squad news

Notable absences included striker Sadiq, who remained in Valencia due to a muscular problem and did not travel with the group. The coaching and medical teams continue to monitor his recovery ahead of the competitive season, prioritising caution over risk.

Danjuma’s full-group presence was significant because he had missed previous friendlies while managing back issues. His two goals in the Derby County meeting offer a timely boost to the attacking unit and give staff options as they plan rotations for upcoming tests.

Upcoming fixtures in England and return plans

Valencia will remain in England for further training before facing Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday, with the friendly scheduled for 19:30 (Spanish peninsular time). That fixture represents the next on-field examination for the squad, and coaches are expected to again manage minutes while testing tactical variations.

After concluding the English stage, the team will return to the Ciudad Deportiva de Paterna to finalise preparations. The club’s calendar presently includes the Trofeo Naranja at Mestalla against Newcastle on August 8 at 21:00, while officials are pursuing an additional friendly for the weekend of August 15 to fill the gap produced by a requested postponement of the opening league round involving Betis.

Valencia’s planning seeks to balance competitive challenge and player welfare as the start of the season approaches.

Tactical takeaways from the session

Valencia’s staff used the match to evaluate pressing triggers, defensive compactness and transitions from midfield to attack. The side displayed improved coordination in moments, particularly when Danjuma found space and finished clinically inside the penalty area.

Defensive rotations were designed to measure pairing options and fitness levels, with several combinations given the chance to work through set-piece responsibilities. The coaching team left the session with clear data on which units require further work before official competition begins.

Final preparations will hinge on converting the training intensity into consistency, and the club will use the remaining friendlies to tighten systems and decision-making under pressure.

Valencia’s closed-door win at St. George’s Park provided valuable minutes and a confidence lift ahead of a run of fixtures that will determine readiness for the season’s opening matches.
