Manuel Baum appointed permanent Augsburg head coach until 2028 after 2025/26 revival

Manuel Baum secured a permanent contract with FC Augsburg through 2028 after guiding the club to a ninth-place Bundesliga finish in 2025/26, following a midseason appointment and a strong second half of the campaign.

Augsburg make interim appointment permanent

Manuel Baum’s temporary promotion to the dugout in December 2025 has been converted into a long-term deal, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The Bavarian side rewarded the 44-year-old with a contract running to the summer of 2028 after a campaign that saw Augsburg climb the table under his stewardship.

Sporting director Benni Weber framed the move as a vote of confidence in the direction the team has taken since Baum’s arrival. Club officials pointed to improved form after a difficult autumn as the rationale for offering a multi-year deal and a steady platform for the coming seasons.

Performance turnaround and league finish

Augsburg’s league position improved markedly in the second half of the 2025/26 season, culminating in a ninth-place finish that ranks among the club’s best top-flight results. The run of positive results that followed Baum’s takeover provided the statistical backbone for the decision to make his role permanent.

The club recorded one of its most consistent patches since promotion to the Bundesliga, translating defensive stability and a pragmatic approach into regular points. That resurgence allowed Augsburg to close the season clear of relegation concerns and finish well inside the top half of the table.

From development role to first-team leadership

Baum had initially been brought into Augsburg’s football department as Head of Development & Football Innovation, a role designed to shape the club’s long-term strategy. A change of course in December 2025 saw him step into the first-team hot seat on an interim basis, replacing Sandro Wagner.

Despite the shift away from his original brief, Baum embraced the day-to-day demands of first-team coaching and quickly established a working rapport with players and staff. The club emphasized that his familiarity with the organization and his work across development pathways eased the transition and supported continuity.

Sporting director’s assessment and club strategy

Benni Weber said the coaching staff had been central to the club’s recovery, highlighting the improvement after a challenging start to the season. Augsburg’s leadership described the permanent appointment as part of a wider plan to marry short-term competitiveness with longer-term development goals.

The decision to lock in a head coach through 2028 reflects a trend among mid-table Bundesliga clubs to prioritise stability. Augsburg framed the contract as both a reward for recent results and a commitment to a defined playing philosophy that spans academy and senior levels.

Tactical adjustments and squad dynamics

Under Baum, Augsburg shifted toward a pragmatic setup tailored to the squad’s strengths, with an emphasis on structure and collective defending. The team’s ability to grind out results in tight matches was a defining feature of the late-season run that elevated their league position.

Internally, the coaching change introduced fresh routines and clarifications of role that appeared to galvanize several senior players. While specific tactical blueprints will continue to evolve, the overriding message from the club is that coherence between training, analysis and matchday execution produced measurable gains.

Contract terms and expectations for 2026/27

The new contract secures Manuel Baum’s leadership into the 2027/28 campaign and gives the club time to plan recruitment and project development over the coming transfer windows. Augsburg say the length of the deal provides a stable platform for both short-term progression and the club’s medium-term aspirations.

Baum has expressed enthusiasm about carrying the momentum forward and emphasized the importance of the summer period for preparation and squad planning. The club’s hierarchy will now turn attention to refining the roster, integrating youth prospects and setting concrete objectives for the upcoming season.

A final phase of transfer activity and pre-season work will test whether the improvements recorded in the latter half of 2025/26 can be sustained and developed into a higher league standing. The Augsburg board has made clear it expects progress, and the extended contract gives Baum the runway to implement his vision.

The appointment signals Augsburg’s intent to blend continuity with careful evolution as they aim to consolidate their position in the Bundesliga and build a competitive, sustainable model for the years ahead.
