Borussia Dortmund forward Cole Campbell is the subject of reported interest from Celtic, with initial conversations between the Scottish champions and the German club understood to have taken place after Hoffenheim elected not to trigger a purchase clause. Sky Germany sources say the 20-year-old, an under-23 U.S. international, faces limited opportunities under Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač and is open to a transfer to Glasgow. The situation sets up a transfer window scenario in which Dortmund appear prepared to monetise a player who has struggled for senior minutes in recent seasons.

Celtic open talks for Cole Campbell

Celtic have moved quickly to explore the possibility of signing Campbell, according to the reporting, holding initial discussions with Dortmund representatives about a potential deal. The club from Glasgow are assessing how Campbell could fit into their frontline and whether his profile aligns with manager and squad plans for the coming season.

Sources indicate Celtic see Campbell as a player with upside who could be developed into a regular contributor at Scottish Premiership level. The club’s recruitment team is understood to be weighing his past youth output and his short senior loan experience before determining whether to advance talks to a formal bid.

Dortmund willing to sell as pathway closes

At Borussia Dortmund, the pathway for Campbell into the first team has been described as limited under Niko Kovač, creating a situation where the club is open to offers. Dortmund have a history of selling young players who cannot secure regular minutes, and the club’s willingness to negotiate suggests a pragmatic approach to squad management and asset value.

Dortmund’s priority appears to be finding the right destination for Campbell where he can play and progress, rather than retaining him without clear opportunities. That stance increases the likelihood that a structured transfer, potentially including sell-on clauses or performance-related add-ons, could be agreed if Celtic or another suitor puts forward acceptable terms.

Hoffenheim decline €7.5m option after limited loan

Campbell spent the latter part of last season on loan at TSG Hoffenheim, where his time in the senior side was limited to five appearances and no direct goal contributions. Hoffenheim had a €7.5 million purchase option tied to the loan agreement, but the club opted not to exercise that clause after evaluating his impact and potential role within their squad.

The decision by Hoffenheim to pass on the option underscores the challenge Campbell has faced transitioning from youth-level prominence to consistent senior minutes. It also leaves Dortmund to find alternative suitors ready to invest in his development and accept a player whose recent senior output is modest.

Youth production contrasted with senior struggles

Campbell earned attention during the 2023-24 campaign by producing strong numbers at youth level, recording eight goals and ten assists in 22 appearances in the U-19 Bundesliga West. Those figures highlighted his ability to influence games in his age group and contributed to his reputation as a promising winger within Dortmund’s academy ranks.

However, the jump to senior football has so far proven difficult to navigate. Limited minutes during the Hoffenheim loan and the absence of goal involvements in those appearances have tempered expectations, illustrating the common gulf between youth excellence and senior consistency.

Potential transfer structure and financial considerations

Any transfer between Dortmund and Celtic is likely to reflect the player’s mixed profile: high potential but limited senior evidence. Reports suggest Dortmund may be prepared to accept a deal that balances an initial fee with add-ons tied to appearances, goals, or future sales, allowing Celtic to manage risk while rewarding Dortmund for future success.

From Celtic’s perspective, the club will evaluate value for money and the speed at which Campbell can be integrated. Negotiations are expected to consider wages, guaranteed playing time, and possible loan-back arrangements or performance milestones that protect both clubs’ interests should Campbell require additional development time.

How Campbell would fit into Celtic’s squad plans

If a move proceeds, Campbell would arrive at a club with recent domestic dominance and aspirations in European competition, presenting both opportunity and pressure to perform. Celtic’s recruitment model has favoured signing young talents who can develop quickly and contribute to a squad that competes on multiple fronts, and Campbell’s profile fits that template in theory.

Tactically, Campbell’s role would likely be on the right flank where his youth productivity suggests an ability to influence the final third with direct attacking contributions. Celtic’s coaching staff will have to determine whether he is ready to step into first-team minutes immediately or if a phased integration plan, starting with substitute appearances and cup matches, would be preferable.

Transfer timing and next steps

With the summer window open, the timeline for any transfer is governed by both clubs’ priorities and their other recruitment moves. Celtic must balance interest in Campbell with other targets, while Dortmund will consider the market and internal squad planning before sanctioning a sale.

Further talks between the clubs are expected, with both sides assessing financial terms and potential guarantees around playing time or loan arrangements. Any deal would likely be announced once contractual details are agreed and medicals completed.

The coming weeks will be decisive as Celtic weigh the potential of a low-risk, high-upside signing against immediate squad needs, while Dortmund seeks the best pathway for a young winger whose next move could determine the trajectory of his senior career.
