Sevilla complete signing of Arouna Sangante on five-year deal

Sevilla have announced the signing of Arouna Sangante on a five-year contract, joining the club on a free transfer from Le Havre until June 30, 2031. The 25-year-old Senegalese centre-back becomes Sevilla’s third confirmed summer arrival, following Jon Guridi and Juan Iglesias, and is expected to add physical presence and experience to a defence undergoing overhaul.

Sevilla confirm five-year deal for Arouna Sangante

Sevilla issued an official statement confirming the acquisition of Arouna Sangante on a contract that runs through June 30, 2031. The transfer was completed on a free after Sangante’s contract with Le Havre expired, and the player joins the Nervión club with a reported market value close to €8 million.

The club framed the move as part of its summer recruitment drive, adding Sangante as the third incoming signing after Jon Guridi and Juan Iglesias. Sporting director work initiated under Antonio Cordón played a role in advancing the operation before his departure, according to the club’s release.

A nine-year development at Le Havre

Sangante leaves Le Havre after a formative nine-year association with the French club, having joined the Normandy side as a teenager following spells at Cosmos Saint-Denis and Red Star. He progressed through the youth ranks into the first team, making his senior debut in the 2020–21 season and establishing himself as a regular over subsequent campaigns.

Across the 2021–22 season Sangante appeared 32 times in Ligue 2, contributing a goal and helping the team build momentum. The following campaign he played 35 league matches, added three goals and two assists, and was part of the side that secured promotion to Ligue 1 as champions.

Playing profile and attributes Sevilla are buying

Sangante is a central defender who combines size, aerial ability and the sort of mobility modern coaches value when building from the back. His record across two full seasons in France’s second tier and three seasons in Ligue 1 demonstrates durability and a capacity to adapt to higher levels of competition.

Sevilla appear to have targeted a defender who can compete physically in Spain’s top flight while offering composure on the ball. At 25, Sangante still has room to develop tactically and technically, and his experience as Le Havre’s captain in recent seasons suggests leadership qualities the club will hope to cultivate.

How Sangante fits into Sevilla’s defensive overhaul

The arrival of Sangante comes amid a broader reshaping of Sevilla’s backline. The club has already seen Nemanja Gudelj depart after seven seasons following an inability to agree a renewal, and several defenders could be involved in further market movement. Players such as Juanlu, Carmona, Oso, Kike Salas and Castrín have been mentioned as assets who may attract interest or provide squad flexibility.

At the same time, questions remain over the long-term status of other centre-backs, with uncertainty surrounding the futures and form of figures like Marcao and Tanguy Nianzou. Meanwhile, squad members who featured sparingly last season, including Gattoni and Cardoso, will need to press for minutes if they are to remain in the coach’s plans.

Sporting context and what Sevilla hope to achieve

Sevilla’s recruitment strategy underlines a desire to refresh a defence that will be pivotal as the club competes across domestic and European fronts. The signing of Sangante fits a pattern of adding relatively young, ascending players who can be integrated into a club with continental ambitions and an established identity.

The club will expect Sangante to compete immediately for a starting berth while adapting to the tactical demands of La Liga. His integration will be watched closely as Sevilla balance continuity with the need to address gaps left by departures and inconsistent minutes from other squad members.

International prospects and player ambitions

Internationally, Sangante has not yet made a competitive senior appearance for Senegal, although he received call-ups for friendlies in 2024. Physical issues prevented him from taking part on that occasion, and the move to Sevilla could increase his visibility and strengthen his case for future selections.

For Sangante personally, the transfer represents his first experience outside France and a significant step in a career that has progressed steadily since his teenage years. Joining a club with Sevilla’s profile provides him with a platform to test himself against higher-calibre opposition and to pursue both club and international milestones.

Sevilla completed the deal without paying a transfer fee, securing Sangante on a free transfer that includes a five-year term through the summer of 2031. The club has signalled that this transfer is part of a broader recruitment plan in which Sangante’s attributes match tactical and physical requirements identified by the technical staff.

The coming weeks will see Sangante join pre-season training and begin the process of adaptation to his new teammates and to Spanish football. Sevilla supporters will be looking for quick signs that the new signing can shore up a defence in transition and contribute to the team’s objectives in the coming campaign.
