Claudio Giráldez opened his assessment of Celta Vigo’s preseason by highlighting steady progress after the first 15 days of work under his direction. The coach said the team’s attitude has been positive and that the early weeks — traditionally the toughest physically — have passed without major setbacks. With the LaLiga curtain-raiser at Balaídos against Osasuna set for August 16, 2026, Giráldez emphasized measured build-up and continuity as the priorities in the run-up to the first competitive match.

Giráldez praises attitude and early progress

Claudio Giráldez said he is happy with the players’ mindset during the initial phases of preparation. He noted that the second and third weeks of preseason are especially demanding, a period when the load increases and fatigue becomes more noticeable.

The coach framed the early work as a foundation for the season, stressing that while the group is not yet at peak match fitness, the overall trajectory is encouraging. He underlined that maintaining a high standard of attitude and application in training remains central to the club’s plans.

Managing fatigue and avoiding injuries

Giráldez described the current phase as one in which careful management of workload is essential to prevent injuries. He explained that the squad has felt the typical tiredness that comes with intensified sessions but that no significant injuries have materialized to date.

Minor niggles are expected in this stage of preparation, he said, and medical staff have been active in monitoring recovery and treatment. The coach credited that careful approach with keeping the squad available and on track for the opening-day target.

Integration of new players into the system

A key objective during this period has been the integration of new signings into Celta’s playing model, according to Giráldez. He wants newcomers to assimilate the tactical patterns and tempo that the team will use across the season.

The coach singled out consistency and regularity as the team’s primary aims, noting that getting everyone aligned in training rhythms and responsibilities is more important than transient results in friendlies. He said the coaching staff is focusing on repetitions and clarity so that collective habits are established well before competitive pressure arrives.

Starfelt back in full-group training

Celta have also had positive news on the availability front with the return of defender Starfelt to group sessions. Giráldez confirmed Starfelt has completed three full sessions and was managed in match minutes during the most recent preparation game to prevent overload.

The coach pointed out that the player’s long period of inactivity — interrupted only briefly by international involvement — required a cautious reintegration plan. Medical and technical staff have paced his minutes to build match sharpness while reducing the risk of recurrence of previous problems.

Tactical focus ahead of Balaídos opener

As the calendar narrows toward August 16, Giráldez is shifting attention to tactical preparedness and match-specific scenarios. Training has begun to emphasize transitions, set-piece work and defensive organization tailored to the threats posed by Osasuna.

The coach has indicated that while physical conditioning remains a priority, sessions will increasingly reflect the tempo and decision-making required in LaLiga fixtures. Opponent analysis and situational drills are being layered onto the fitness work to accelerate readiness.

Countdown to LaLiga: timeline and next steps

Celta’s immediate schedule over the coming weeks will balance intensity with recovery to avoid peaking too early. Giráldez has mapped out incremental increases in minutes and tactical complexity as the club moves through the latter stages of preseason.

The manager highlighted the importance of preserving player freshness, especially for those recovering from long layoffs, while still ensuring competitive minutes are available before the opener. The club’s medical and performance teams will play a central role in that calibration.

Looking ahead, Giráldez emphasized the team’s collective responsibility to convert preseason work into consistent performances once the league begins. He reiterated that the priority is to enter the season healthy, mentally prepared and tactically coherent.

For Celta Vigo, the next three weeks will test how effectively the squad can turn training ground progress into match sharpness at Balaídos on August 16, 2026. The coaching staff appears focused on a steady, sustainable approach that aims to deliver fitness, cohesion and availability when the new LaLiga campaign begins.
