SV Darmstadt poised to sign K League striker Ho-Jae Lee

SV Darmstadt close to signing Ho-Jae Lee from Pohang, the 25-year-old striker who has emerged as one of K League 1’s most prolific forwards this season.

Darmstadt move to secure Ho-Jae Lee

SV Darmstadt are in the final stages of a transfer that would bring Ho-Jae Lee from Pohang Steelers to the 2. Bundesliga side, with an announcement expected in the coming days, according to kicker.
The transfer would address Darmstadt’s need for a physical presence up front after the departures of Fraser Hornby and Isac Lidberg.
Manager Florian Kohfeldt and the club’s recruitment team have been linked to a number of attacking options, but Lee has become the priority following his recent scoring form.

Striker profile and physical attributes

Ho-Jae Lee stands at 1.92 metres, combining height with a forward’s instinct that has yielded consistent returns at club level.
At 25 years old, he offers a profile suited to the demands of the German second tier: aerial threat, hold-up play and an ability to finish in the box.
Darmstadt will expect him to adapt quickly to Kohfeldt’s tactical setup, where physical forwards have been tasked with linking play and creating space for more mobile teammates.

K League form that prompted interest

Lee has been one of K League 1’s standout scorers this season, leading the South Korean contingent with eight goals so far.
Only Yago Cariello, with nine goals, has a higher total in the league at the moment, highlighting Lee’s standing among the division’s most dangerous attackers.
His 2025 campaign further underlined his quality, when he finished third in the league scoring charts with 15 goals, a mark that attracted attention beyond the Korean peninsula.

Career numbers and development at Pohang

Across his spell with Pohang Steelers, Lee has accumulated 53 goals in 177 appearances, a return that reflects sustained productivity rather than a single-season spike.
Those figures indicate a forward who has grown into his role through regular game time, learning to convert chances and contribute in different phases of play.
Pohang’s system, which often blends quick transitions with a traditional attacking line, helped Lee develop a mixed skill set that appeals to European scouts.

International debut and potential for South Korea

Lee’s progression has also been noted at national level, where he scored on his full South Korea debut at the East Asian Football Championship last year.
That immediate impact on the international stage suggests he can handle pressure and perform when stepping up to higher-profile matches.
A move to Germany would place him in a more visible environment for national team selectors, potentially increasing his role with South Korea if he adapts well.

Why Darmstadt view Lee as a solution

Darmstadt’s attacking overhaul follows a season in which the club challenged for promotion before slipping in form late in the campaign.
With Hornby and Lidberg gone, the club faces the task of rebuilding its forward options quickly, and Lee’s mix of size and finishing offers a direct replacement profile.
Kohfeldt’s side will be looking for immediate returns, and Lee’s record of scoring in domestic competition and contributing in international settings makes him an appealing short- and medium-term investment.

Expected transfer mechanics and timetable

Sources close to the negotiations indicate that only final formalities remain before Darmstadt make the deal public, with the club likely to confirm the signing within days.
Terms have not been disclosed publicly, but the structure is expected to follow a permanent transfer rather than a loan, consistent with Darmstadt’s recent recruitment strategy.
Medical checks and paperwork are the usual concluding steps, after which the club will present Lee as their new attacking signing and integrate him into pre-season planning.

Darmstadt will hope Ho-Jae Lee can adapt swiftly to German football and provide the goals and physical presence lost with recent departures.
