Selangor FC vs Nam Định: Chrigor Moraes brace gives Selangor 2-1 edge in ASEAN Club Championship semi-final

Selangor FC vs Nam Định first-leg result: Chrigor Moraes struck twice as Selangor FC edged Nam Định 2-1 at MBPJ Stadium on 6 May 2026, taking a crucial advantage into the second leg. The match in Petaling Jaya featured momentum swings and key defensive interventions, with Selangor’s combination play down the right repeatedly troubling the V.League 1 champions. Selangor now travel to Vietnam next Wednesday holding a one-goal lead in the 2025/26 ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup semi-final tie.

Chrigor Moraes’ brace secures 2-1 lead for Selangor FC

Chrigor opened the scoring with a composed finish after a swift Selangor transition, tucking the ball in from close range to put the hosts ahead shortly before halftime. Nam Định responded through Nguyễn Văn Vĩ just into first-half stoppage time to level matters, but Chrigor restored Selangor’s advantage in the 58th minute with a drilled finish over the goalkeeper. The Brazilian forward’s two goals were the decisive moments in a tightly contested first leg between the Malaysia Super League side and the V.League 1 champions.

First-half swings shaped the contest at MBPJ Stadium

The game began with both sides probing for quick openings, and Selangor threatened early through the pace of Faisal Halim while a long-range effort by Chadrac Akolo was diverted wide by defender Safuwan Baharudin. Nam Định had a period of ascendancy before the break, with Percy Tau forcing an effort off the woodwork as the visitors looked to exploit space in transition. Selangor struck against the run of play when Noor Al-Rawabdeh’s searching ball found Quentin Cheng, whose delivery allowed Chrigor to slide in and score from close range.

Nam Định reply and the halftime balance of the tie

Nam Định’s equaliser arrived deep into first-half stoppage time when Percy Tau’s dribbling created an opening and his cutback found Nguyễn Văn Vĩ, who applied a low finish to draw the visitors level. That leveller altered the momentum, preventing Selangor from taking a more comfortable lead into the interval and ensuring the tie remained finely poised. Both teams went into the break with questions to answer tactically, with Selangor seeking to maintain width and Nam Định aiming to press higher and exploit the wings.

Second-half combination play restored Selangor’s lead

Selangor began the second period with intent and reclaimed the lead 13 minutes after the restart as Quentin Cheng and Chrigor combined again, this time after a threaded pass from Faisal found Cheng, whose quick pass set Chrigor up to lift the ball over the advancing Caíque. The goal highlighted Selangor’s ability to convert quick, coordinated movements on the flank into clear-cut opportunities inside the box. After regaining the advantage, Selangor managed the game tempo, shifting between controlled possession and fast breaks to prevent Nam Định from finding a consistent rhythm.

Goalkeeping and defensive interventions proved decisive

Selangor’s goalkeeper Sikh Izhan Nazrel produced a number of important saves, including a close-range header from Nguyễn Tuấn Anh late in the second half that preserved the slim lead. At the other end, Nam Định’s Caíque had earlier denied Faisal’s 20th-minute attempt after a Hibou Boumous-inspired approach play, but could not prevent Chrigor’s second. Defensively, both sides showed vulnerability on transition, but Selangor’s organization around the backline in the closing stages prevented the visitors from forcing an equaliser before the final whistle.

Match momentum, key performers and tactical themes

Chrigor Moraes emerged as the clear match-winner with his clinical finishing and intelligent movement, earning him the Shopee Star of the Match award for his contributions. Quentin Cheng’s involvement in both goals underscored the importance of his overlapping runs and precise service from fullback areas. Nam Định’s threats came primarily through Percy Tau’s direct dribbling and quick interchanges, but the visitors lacked the final pieces of play to convert pressure into additional goals at MBPJ Stadium.

What the second leg in Hanoi is likely to demand

Heading to Vietnam next Wednesday, Selangor carry a narrow advantage but cannot afford to adopt a purely defensive posture if they are to progress to the final of the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup. Nam Định will need to balance attacking intent with defensive caution, as two or more goals would be required to overturn the tie at home, depending on the away-goals regulations in effect. The return fixture is expected to be intense, with both managers likely to tweak formations and personnel to exploit perceived weaknesses observed in the first leg.

Selangor’s ability to reproduce the right-sided combinations that created both goals will be central to their chances in the second leg, while Nam Định must find greater cutting edge in the final third and more compact defensive structure to nullify Selangor’s transitions. Set pieces and individual moments of quality could again decide the tie, making discipline and concentration crucial across the full 90 minutes in Hanoi.

Selangor FC vs Nam Định now stands at 2-1 after the first leg, with Selangor holding the advantage but the tie far from settled ahead of next week’s decisive return match.
