FC Augsburg confirmed on Monday that Hennes Behrens has joined the club from TSG Hoffenheim, signing a deal that runs to the summer of 2031. The 21-year-old left-back impressed during a loan spell at 1. FC Heidenheim last season and arrives to bolster Augsburg’s options on the left flank.

Augsburg complete signing of Hennes Behrens

The transfer was announced by both clubs after agreement on the fee and personal terms, marking Behrens’ permanent move away from Hoffenheim. The defender has agreed a multi-year contract with the Fuggerstädter club and is expected to integrate into the squad ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign.

Augsburg described the signing as part of a targeted reinforcement of their defensive roster, citing Behrens’ Bundesliga exposure and physical profile as key factors. The move follows a productive loan at Heidenheim where Behrens earned recognition for his attacking contributions from full-back.

Transfer fee and contract terms

Sources close to the deal indicate the base transfer fee paid to Hoffenheim is in the region of €3.5million, with a further €1million available in performance-related bonuses. The structure suggests Augsburg view the signing as a low-risk investment with upside tied to Behrens’ development and playing time.

Behrens has signed a contract running until 2031, giving the club long-term control of a player still at the early stage of his professional career. That duration reflects Augsburg’s intention to develop the 21-year-old within their setup, while also protecting his market value should he progress rapidly.

Behrens’ loan spell at Heidenheim

During the second half of last season Behrens featured 16 times for 1. FC Heidenheim, scoring one goal and providing two assists as he adapted to regular Bundesliga minutes. His performances stood out even as Heidenheim ultimately suffered relegation, with scouts noting his forward thrust and defensive versatility.

At Hoffenheim prior to the loan, Behrens progressed through the youth ranks and trained in a senior environment that emphasises technical development. The Heidenheim stint gave him consistent match exposure at the top level, helping to build the experience Augsburg cited when confirming the signing.

How Behrens fits into Augsburg’s left-back options

Augsburg will add Behrens to a defensive cohort that values athleticism and the ability to contribute going forward, traits the 21-year-old demonstrated in his loan appearances. His blend of physical presence and attacking instincts offers the club tactical flexibility on the left side, whether in a back four or as a wing-back.

The club’s coaching staff will likely evaluate Behrens during pre-season to determine his role in the starting XI and rotation plans. Competition for the left-back spot is expected to be healthy, and Behrens’ arrival increases Augsburg’s options for matchday selection and injury cover.

Sporting director Benni Weber’s rationale

Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber said the club were confident Behrens matched their profile for a modern full-back and praised his Bundesliga exposure despite his young age. Club officials highlighted his physique, positional understanding and technical attributes as reasons for investing in him on a long-term deal.

The acquisition aligns with Augsburg’s recent recruitment pattern of signing young players with top-flight experience who can be developed further. By securing Behrens on a contract to 2031, the club gains time to shape his progression and potentially realise future transfer value.

Development pathway and future prospects

At 21, Behrens is at a stage where consistent coaching and competitive minutes can significantly accelerate his development, and Augsburg appear prepared to offer that platform. The club can provide regular Bundesliga involvement alongside targeted training to refine his tactical awareness and end product in the final third.

If Behrens secures regular playing time and maintains the progressive trajectory shown at Heidenheim, he could become a fixture within Augsburg’s defensive unit and attract broader attention. For now, the immediate priority will be adapting to his new teammates and the tactical demands set out by the coaching staff during pre-season.

Hopes are high at FC Augsburg that Hennes Behrens will transition smoothly into his new environment, using the experience gained on loan as a foundation for continued growth. The club’s investment reflects belief in his potential to contribute this season and beyond, while also positioning Augsburg to benefit from any further advancement in his game.
