Manolo González Espanyol: Coach to Stay After Automatic Renewal, Eyes Summer Rebuild with Monchi

Manolo González Espanyol renewal confirmed after survival; the coach praised the squad’s resilience and outlined plans to work with new director Monchi to push the club forward. The manager said he is happy to remain in charge for another season after the clause in his contract was triggered by Primera División survival. He reflected on a turbulent campaign and set out immediate priorities for recruitment and tactical development heading into the summer window.

Renewal Activated Following LaLiga Survival

Manolo González’s contract renewal was automatically activated after Espanyol secured another season in LaLiga, ensuring continuity on the bench. The technical staff and club leadership moved quickly to confirm the extension, a development González described as “a source of great satisfaction” and a vote of confidence. The club’s decision stabilizes the sporting project ahead of planned changes in recruitment and structure.

Coach’s Assessment: A Season Rated Seven

González offered a candid review of the year, rating the campaign a seven despite uneven form. He noted the team improved on last season’s output and achieved the primary objective of staying in the top flight, but admitted results and expectations diverged at times. The coach emphasized that the final standing reflected progress and that, had supporters been told at the start of the season how it would end, most would have accepted it.

Turning Points and the Second-Half Slide

The manager identified a significant dip in the second half of the season, which he attributed chiefly to anxiety and a mental block rather than a lack of ability. He said the squad often performed better than results suggested during that run and that the slippage was rooted in confidence issues that compounded with each match. González pinpointed the win over Athletic Club as a pivotal moment that helped break the negative cycle and restore belief in the dressing room.

“Giant Dormant” and Club Unity as a Foundation

González framed Espanyol as a “giant dormant,” stressing the club’s potential and the need for collective improvement across the organisation. He repeatedly underlined unity between players, coaches, and executives as essential to unlocking that potential and warned against complacency. The coach expressed optimism about the club’s margin for growth and called for consistent work and better processes to translate resources into on-field progress.

Summer Strategy: Close Collaboration with Monchi

A central element of González’s roadmap is close coordination with new sporting director Monchi during the summer transfer period. He described a shared approach to recruitment, saying both must agree on targets who fit the tactical plan and the club’s long-term ambitions. González wants recruits who can take Espanyol “one step further,” adding physical and technical profiles that enable a clearer, more coherent style of play.

Tactical Aims and Recruitment Priorities

The coach signalled an intent to evolve the team’s playing identity, aiming for a style more in line with his vision and the club’s aspirations. He said previous limitations had prevented full implementation of his ideas and that incoming players should help bridge that gap. Recruitment priorities, he suggested, will focus on balance across the pitch—players who can improve ball circulation, defensive stability, and the team’s ability to control games.

Espanyol’s summer work plan, according to González, will emphasise both immediate needs and longer-term building blocks. The manager wants to avoid short-term fixes that do not support a sustainable identity, and he expects the club to target profiles that combine readiness with potential for development. He also noted the importance of integrating new signings quickly so that pre-season can be used as a platform for tactical cohesion.

Lessons from the Campaign and Next Season’s Objectives

González drew a number of concrete lessons from the campaign, starting with the psychological resilience required to endure a long season. He stressed that maintaining competitiveness requires attention to mental preparation and the capacity to manage pressure in critical phases. For next season, the coach set measurable objectives: consolidate a higher league position, reduce the swings in form, and establish a clearer playing model.

The manager also sees an opportunity to refine internal structures, including training methods and match preparation routines, to support more consistent performances. He has asked staff to analyse the factors behind both positive and negative runs with an eye to removing recurring weaknesses. González believes that incremental improvements across many areas will be the most reliable path to sustained progress.

Expectations and a Measured Timeline

While enthusiastic, González tempered immediate expectations, stressing that meaningful change requires time and coordinated effort. He emphasised that the club has to be patient with the process, build carefully during the transfer window and use pre-season to set the foundations. The coach was clear that success will be judged on gradual upward movement rather than instant transformation.

González acknowledged the responsibility that comes with continued trust from the club’s leadership, and he committed to delivering clearer tactical identity and improved results. He urged supporters to remain engaged and said the best way to repay their faith is through visible progress on the pitch. The coach framed the next year as a decisive period in which planning, recruitment and cohesion must converge.

The team will now enter the summer phase with a retained coaching staff, an incoming sporting director and a mandate to strengthen the squad in targeted areas. That combination, González believes, offers a practical route to close the gap between potential and performance. He left the meeting with cautious optimism and a checklist of priorities to guide the club through a pivotal off-season.

Espanyol fans can expect a busy transfer window, clearer tactical signals during pre-season and a renewed emphasis on mental resilience as the club seeks to translate its dormant potential into sustained success.
