Malawi deliver a seismic upset in Rabat

Malawi produced one of the tournament’s most remarkable results when they defeated Nigeria 3-2 in their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations match. The shock win came at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat and immediately rewrote expectations in Group C.

The Super Falcons entered the competition as defending champions and the clear favourites, but they left Morocco stunned by a side making its WAFCON debut. Malawi’s victory will be remembered as one of the competition’s biggest upsets.

The outcome alters the early group standings and hands Malawi a springboard they could build on as the tournament progresses. For Nigeria, the loss is an abrupt and unwelcome interruption to a strong run of form.

Chawinga sisters produce decisive late goals

The game swung in Malawi’s favour late in the second half when Temwa Chawinga broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute. Her strike was the catalyst for a frantic closing period that produced three more goals and a flurry of drama.

Just six minutes after Temwa’s opener, Tabitha Chawinga doubled Malawi’s lead, completing a quickfire double that left the Super Falcons scrambling. The sisters combined to change the complexion of the match and handed Malawi a two-goal cushion at a critical moment.

Temwa then restored that advantage deep into stoppage time, latching onto a late chance to score her second and make it 3-1. Her late intervention proved crucial in preserving Malawi’s landmark win despite Nigeria’s late resurgence.

The Chawinga sisters’ contributions underlined Malawi’s attacking threat and will boost belief within a squad making a striking first impression on the continental stage.

Super Falcons dominate early but fail to convert

Nigeria controlled much of the early proceedings and created multiple scoring opportunities but were unable to break through in the first half. The Super Falcons’ possession and movement suggested they would eventually force openings, yet clear-cut chances were squandered.

Head coach Justin Madugu had spoken beforehand of confidence that the defending champions would start their title defence with a victory, and his side’s early play reflected that belief. But clinical finishing proved to be the missing ingredient until the closing minutes.

A penalty converted by captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the 90th minute reignited Nigeria’s chances and set up a frantic finale. Substitute Uchenna Kanu then added a headed goal deep into stoppage time, but the comeback fell short as Malawi held on for the historic 3-2 result.

The manner in which Nigeria surrendered a two-goal lead and then almost rallied in the dying moments will invite scrutiny, particularly over finishing and defensive organisation in high-pressure situations.

Zambia’s rout reshapes Group C dynamics

While Rabat witnessed Malawi’s breakthrough, the other Group C fixture produced a contrasting statement as Zambia thumped Egypt 6-0. Captain Barbra Banda led the emphatic victory, showcasing Zambia’s firepower and immediate title credentials.

Zambia’s large winning margin places them top of Group C on goal difference, with Malawi second on three points and Nigeria yet to register. Egypt’s heavy defeat leaves their hopes hanging early in the group stage.

The contrasting results make Saturday’s showdown between Nigeria and Zambia a pivotal encounter. For Nigeria, the match is now a must-win to avoid early elimination pressure and to revive ambitions of securing an unprecedented 11th WAFCON title.

Zambia’s convincing performance will increase the pressure on both of their Group C rivals, who must now balance recovery and damage limitation ahead of the next round of matches.

Tactical takeaways and player performances

Malawi’s approach combined discipline and ruthless execution in key moments, allowing the visitors to capitalize when openings appeared late in the contest. The Chawinga sisters exploited space and timing, while Malawi’s organisation restricted Nigeria’s penetration for long stretches.

Nigeria’s technical superiority was apparent in phases, but the team lacked cutting edge in the final third for much of the match. Missed chances and momentary lapses at the back ultimately proved costly for the Super Falcons.

Substitutions had a decisive impact on the game’s final chapters, with Nigeria’s late changes supplying the goals that almost rescued a point. Malawi’s bench contributions and tactical resilience, however, helped them withstand the late pressure and see out a historic triumph.

Individual performances will be dissected by both camps, with Malawi’s attacking duo and Zambia’s goal threat emerging as the tournament’s early names to watch. Nigeria must re-evaluate defensive duties and finishing under pressure ahead of a crucial fixture.

Consequences and what comes next for Nigeria and Malawi

The result casts immediate doubt over Nigeria’s path to an 11th WAFCON crown, forcing a recalibration of expectations and strategy. A loss to Zambia would leave the defending champions in serious danger of exiting before the knockout rounds.

For Malawi, the victory provides momentum and a rare confidence boost that could sustain them through the group phase. As debutants, they now occupy a position of strength and will aim to consolidate rather than merely celebrate the moment.

Group C now presents a far tighter and more unpredictable landscape, with goal difference and head-to-head outcomes likely to be decisive if teams remain level on points. Every upcoming match will carry amplified significance for the four nations involved.

Coaching staffs must manage recovery, rotation and morale over the midweek buildup to the next fixtures, and the physical demands of tournament football will test depth and adaptability.

Nigeria must prioritize regaining composure and converting dominance into goals, while Malawi will look to harness belief and sustain the blend of discipline and opportunism that delivered their breakthrough.

Malawi’s historic win will reverberate across the tournament and reshape Group C, while Nigeria faces the difficult task of responding quickly to protect their title hopes.
