The MTC HopSol Youth League resumed its second leg last week after a month-long school holiday, with 37 matches staged across multiple venues and age groups from U/11 to U/19. The reopening fixtures underlined the league’s competitive balance, highlighted by Collin Benjamin’s Soccer Talents (CBS) edging Kasaona Football Academy 2-1 in a closely fought U/19 contest. Coaches from both sides stressed the impact of the break on fitness, preparation and player decision-making as teams settle back into league action.

HopSol second leg returns with busy fixture list

The restart featured youth fixtures across U/11, U/15, U/17 and U/19 categories, producing a week packed with action as teams sought to shake off holiday rust. Organizers arranged matches across several community fields to accommodate the compressed calendar, aiming to complete the second leg fixtures on schedule. The volume of games tested squad depth and logistical arrangements for clubs still adjusting to post-holiday routines.

Teams reported uneven preparation windows after the break, with some clubs managing weekend training while others struggled with player availability. That variation was visible on match day as teams alternated between early dominance and second-half lapses. League officials said they would monitor attendance and fitness trends as the season progresses to maintain competitive integrity.

CBS U/19 hold on to beat Kasaona 2-1

In the headline U/19 clash, CBS recorded a 2-1 victory over Kasaona FA in a match that could have swung either way. CBS forwards Craig Muukweli and Ismael April were on target to secure the win, while Marcelinio Smith scored Kasaona’s solitary goal. The match featured an early period of CBS control before Kasaona responded and tightened the game after halftime.

The decisive moments came from moments of individual quality and set-piece situations rather than sustained periods of dominance. CBS converted a penalty opportunity that shifted the momentum, and both sides created chances in a tense second half. Ultimately, the narrow margin reflected a competitive parity between the two youth programs.

CBS coach praises performance but flags concentration issues

CBS coach Henrico Botes described the encounter as physically demanding and praised his side’s early control but acknowledged areas for improvement. He said his players started strongly, controlling the opening 20 minutes with effective build-up play and composure from the back. Botes added that the team conceded just before halftime, which disrupted their rhythm and turned the second half into a tighter, more cautious affair.

The coach stressed the need to remind young players about making the right choices under pressure and maintaining concentration for the full 80 minutes. He also cited post-holiday conditioning and attendance as ongoing challenges that can affect preparation. Despite those concerns, Botes welcomed the three points and saw the result as a platform for further improvement.

Kasaona coach emphasizes development over results

Kasaona FA coach Mamie Kasaona framed the defeat as a learning opportunity and pointed to a costly early penalty as pivotal to the match’s outcome. She said the team started on the back foot after conceding from a soft foul, which dented momentum and morale at a delicate stage. Kasaona praised her players for tactical growth and mental parity with their opponents but noted the squad failed to convert chances when they mattered.

The coach reiterated her focus on player development, explaining that match experience, positional awareness and decision-making are priorities beyond mere results. She described how the club uses regular senior-division exposure—her U/19s train and compete in third-division matches—to enhance readiness. Kasaona also thanked parents who ensured training continued over the holiday, saying that parental support remained vital for consistent development.

Dama FC U/17 overcome holiday rustiness to win 3-1

Elsewhere in the league, Dama Football Club’s U/17 side claimed a 3-1 victory over Baller Boys at the Jan Möhr football field, a result that masked concerns over match fitness. Dama’s coach, Silas Katangolo, conceded his players showed signs of being unfit after the break and had only a week to ramp up before competitive action resumed. He described the performance as workmanlike, crediting the players for grinding out the result while acknowledging the need for more preparation time.

Katangolo said the victory offered a useful platform but stressed that discipline, conditioning and tactical cohesion would require focused training. He noted that with additional sessions and match practice, the team should regain the tempo and sharpness expected at this level. The result nonetheless gave Dama three valuable points as the second leg kicked off.

Fitness, attendance and tactical readiness shaping second-leg dynamics

Coaches across the league flagged common themes after the opening round of post-holiday fixtures: fitness deficits, irregular attendance and the need to reinforce tactical instructions. Several managers said that a month away from structured training had varying effects depending on how clubs and families managed the break. Players who kept active with village games or extra sessions returned in better condition than peers who paused formal practice entirely.

Teams that emphasize structured training and competitive minutes, including integration into senior-level matches, appear better placed to manage the restart. Coaches are now prioritizing short-cycle fitness work, set-piece repetition and mental resilience to reduce soft errors that lead to penalties or late concessions. League administrators are also discussing scheduling flexibility to allow clubs additional preparation windows where feasible.

Looking ahead: what the second leg will demand from youth sides

As the MTC HopSol Youth League progresses through its second leg, squads will be tested on their ability to convert training ground work into consistent match performance. Clubs that address conditioning gaps, stabilise attendance and tighten decision-making should improve rapidly over the coming weeks. Youth coaches emphasise that while results matter, the primary objective remains player growth: improving off-the-ball movement, counter-pressing awareness and situational choices.

The compressed fixture list will reward teams with deeper rosters and clear tactical frameworks, particularly in age groups where physicality and concentration play decisive roles. Parents, coaches and league officials are likely to maintain a collaborative focus on balancing competitive outcomes with developmental goals as the season unfolds.

The MTC HopSol Youth League’s restart offered an immediate reminder that the margins in youth football are fine and that preparation often determines the difference between a narrow loss and a hard-earned win. Teams and coaches now have a clearer sense of priorities—fitness, discipline and decision-making—as they aim to build momentum through the second leg and continue the development pathway for young players.
