Manchester United have opened preliminary talks over a potential contract for Robert Lewandowski, who is set to leave Barcelona when his deal expires this month. The Man United target Robert Lewandowski would arrive as a free agent, offering a low-fee route to add proven goalscoring experience to Erik ten Hag’s forward line. Club sources say negotiations will balance the striker’s wage expectations against competing offers from abroad.

United consider veteran striker to bolster attacking options

Manchester United view Lewandowski as a short-term, high-impact signing who could strengthen their options up front next season. The club’s recruitment team has prioritized adding a proven finisher to support Benjamin Sesko and to provide leadership in the dressing room. Executives believe a veteran presence could deliver immediate returns while younger forwards continue their development.

United’s board have flagged that any deal must fit the club’s long-term wage structure, limiting the scale of a contract they are willing to offer. Negotiations will therefore hinge on whether Lewandowski is prepared to accept a reduced weekly salary relative to his current Barcelona earnings. That financial compromise is central to United’s ability to pursue the former Bayern Munich striker.

How Lewandowski complements Benjamin Sesko and squad balance

Sporting directors see a clear tactical case for pairing Lewandowski with Sesko, offering a blend of experience and youth in central attack. Lewandowski’s proven movement and clinical finishing could create space for Sesko to operate, while his experience in the Champions League would be valuable in European fixtures. Coaching staff envisage alternating starts to manage minutes and protect Lewandowski’s fitness across a demanding calendar.

The signing would also create internal competition, addressing a gap created by inconsistent form among other forwards. Joshua Zirkzee has struggled to establish himself since arriving, prompting speculation that United may be willing to move him on this summer. Adding Lewandowski would allow ten Hag to rotate effectively while maintaining a clear primary goal threat.

Wage demands and rival offers complicate the pursuit

Financial considerations are the biggest hurdle in United’s interest, with reports indicating Lewandowski’s Barca salary sits well above what United typically allocate to a late-career signing. The Polish striker could command significant wages from clubs in Major League Soccer and the Saudi Pro League, which are prepared to offer lucrative packages to attract marquee names. United will need to determine whether the sporting advantages justify asking Lewandowski to accept a sizeable pay cut.

Beyond pure salary, image-rights arrangements and performance bonuses will shape any final offer, as would the length of the contract on offer to a player approaching his late thirties. United’s hierarchy have emphasized a short-term deal with conditional incentives as their preferred model. That approach would limit long-term financial exposure while rewarding on-field contribution.

Fitness, minutes management and recent performance record

While approaching 38, Lewandowski remains a reliable goalscorer, and his recent season in La Liga showed he can still deliver at a high level when used judiciously. Barcelona managed his workload carefully under their manager, often rotating him to preserve sharpness in key matches, and he still contributed significantly to the side’s tallies. Medical and fitness teams at United would conduct thorough assessments before finalizing any move to ensure his conditioning meets Premier League demands.

United’s coaching staff are also mindful of adapting training and recovery programs for older players, particularly those with extensive international and club schedules. The plan would likely include bespoke conditioning and a clearer rotation plan to extend longevity. Such measures are standard for high-minute veterans and would be a central part of contractual discussions.

Transfer window context and timing for a Bosman move

Lewandowski will become available on a Bosman transfer at the end of the month, giving interested clubs a limited window to secure an agreement without a transfer fee. That timing creates urgency for United as they balance recruitment priorities while preparing for Champions League commitments next season. The club’s summer strategy includes multiple targets, and any commitment to Lewandowski would influence other moves, particularly at striker and on the wings.

Given the compressed schedule of the transfer window, both player and club are expected to move deliberately but efficiently, with informal talks likely to precede any formal proposal. United’s hierarchy will also monitor rival suitors closely, aware that attractive offers from MLS or the Middle East could alter Lewandowski’s decision. The club’s negotiators intend to present a package that combines sporting ambition, Champions League football, and a clear role on the pitch.

Manchester United will also weigh fan expectations and commercial considerations in this debate, as acquiring a high-profile veteran can bolster season-ticket sales and global visibility. However, directors insist that any signing must primarily serve the team’s competitive objectives rather than short-term publicity. Lewandowski’s pedigree in top European competitions would be a persuasive argument for his recruitment.

Final considerations will involve the player’s own priorities, which include sporting ambitions, family considerations and the desire for regular playing time in the final years of his career. Lewandowski’s decision will hinge on whether he prefers a leading role in a competitive European setup or a short-term, high-paying move elsewhere. United believe their proposition — Champions League football, a clear role alongside emerging talent, and the chance to compete for major trophies — will be attractive, but the negotiations remain delicate and time-sensitive.
