Chelsea target Pep Chavarria as preferred replacement for Marc Cucurella

Pep Chavarria is Chelsea’s leading transfer target to replace Marc Cucurella — Rayo Vallecano’s adaptable left-back is being linked with a Stamford Bridge move for tactical fit and value.

Pep Chavarria has emerged as Chelsea’s preferred choice to succeed Marc Cucurella, with Spanish reports indicating the Blues have opened contact with Rayo Vallecano over a possible summer transfer. The 28-year-old fullback, who joined Vallecano from Real Zaragoza in 2022, has been a consistent presence on the left flank and is now attracting attention for his blend of defensive solidity and attacking instincts. Chelsea’s interest reflects a broader search for a specialist left-sided defender who can provide immediate competition and experience in Xabi Alonso’s evolving squad.

Chelsea make Pep Chavarria top transfer target

Reports from Spain say Chelsea have identified Pep Chavarria as their top target to fill the left-back vacancy left by Marc Cucurella’s uncertain future. Club sources suggest the Blues have already initiated exploratory talks with Rayo Vallecano to test Chavarria’s availability and willingness to move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The decision to prioritise a player like Chavarria signals Chelsea’s intent to recruit a proven specialist on the left rather than adapt an existing squad member to the role. That approach would give manager Xabi Alonso a ready-made option who has regularly played as a left-back and left wing-back at a high level in LaLiga.

Chavarria’s role and form at Rayo Vallecano

Since his transfer from Real Zaragoza in 2022, Pep Chavarria has been a fixture for Rayo Vallecano, making more than 120 appearances and contributing across the left side of the team. He started the majority of matches in the most recent campaign, appearing in 33 of 38 LaLiga fixtures, and helped Vallecano reach the UEFA Conference League final.

Chavarria’s performances combined defensive resilience with selective attacking contributions, including a notable long-range goal against Atletico Madrid last season. His comfort in multiple left-sided roles — fullback, wing-back and occasionally further forward — has been a defining feature of his spell in Madrid.

Statistical case: duels won and goal contributions

Beyond appearance figures, Chavarria’s defensive numbers have attracted attention; he was among the leaders for duels won across Europe’s top competitions during the latest reporting period. As of late 2025 he was regularly cited among the top-ranked players for one-on-one and ground duels, underscoring his effectiveness in defensive transitions.

Offensively, his raw goal and assist totals are modest but impactful, with roughly ten goal contributions since joining Vallecano and a season that included several shots from distance and progressive actions. That combination of defensive bite and occasional attacking threat fits the profile Chelsea appear to be seeking for a modern, two-way fullback.

Why Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea are prioritising a specialist left-back

Chelsea’s current options on the left include players who are not natural left-backs by trade, which appears to be influencing recruitment priorities. The club has recently signed players who can operate in the left channel, but the coaching staff reportedly want a player whose primary position is on the left to provide balance and tactical clarity.

A specialist like Chavarria would allow Alonso to deploy a conventional back four or a more dynamic wing-back system without asking centre-back or right-sided players to adapt long-term. That positional certainty is particularly valuable as Chelsea aim to blend youth prospects with experienced professionals across next season’s campaigns.

Transfer feasibility and financial outlook

From a financial perspective, Rayo Vallecano are not expected to demand a sky-high fee for Chavarria, and Chelsea have been gauging the market to see whether a deal can be struck within a reasonable budget. Public valuations put the fullback’s market worth at a level that would be affordable for a club of Chelsea’s size, making a move plausible without an excessive transfer outlay.

Negotiations would likely hinge on Rayo’s appetite to sell a key player ahead of the new season and on Chelsea’s willingness to convert exploratory contact into a formal offer. The Blues’ recruitment strategy in recent windows has emphasised balancing marquee signings with economically sensible additions, which could work in favour of completing a deal for Chavarria.

Squad implications and tactical options at Stamford Bridge

If Pep Chavarria were to join Chelsea, his arrival would alter the club’s defensive options and potentially free up other players to play in their preferred positions. A new specialist at left-back would provide competition for places, allow rotation across multiple competitions, and offer Alonso tactical flexibility depending on opponent and formation.

Chavarria’s combination of pace, one-on-one defending and willingness to carry the ball forward would also present a direct option in attack from deeper positions. That could benefit Chelsea in transition phases and reduce reliance on inverted fullbacks or makeshift wide defenders when balancing defensive solidity with offensive width.

Chelsea’s interest in Pep Chavarria comes at a moment when the club is balancing squad development, tactical clarity and financial prudence. Whether contact develops into a formal bid will depend on negotiations with Rayo Vallecano and on Chelsea’s assessment of how Chavarria would integrate into Xabi Alonso’s plans for the coming season.
