Jhon Solís transfer has been completed after Birmingham City exercised the purchase option on the Colombian midfielder, with Girona confirming the sale following his loan in the Championship. The English club will pay a reported €7 million to make the move permanent, a decision that follows an encouraging second half of the season for the 21-year-old. Girona, who had acquired Solís from Atlético Nacional in the summer of 2023, will add the €7m to the €500,000 they already received for the loan arrangement. The transfer marks a clear change in direction for a player whose development trajectory stalled in Catalonia but showed renewed momentum in England.

Birmingham completes €7m deal for Jhon Solís

Birmingham formalized the purchase option during the close of the loan, confirming the club’s intention to keep Solís beyond the temporary spell. The decision reflects the club’s assessment that Solís’ performances and potential justify the fee agreed in the January loan agreement. Club sources indicated the move was made after internal reviews of his impact on the pitch and his fit within the squad’s tactical setup. The permanent signing will see Solís join Birmingham’s off-season planning with a view to integrating him as a regular contributor next campaign.

Financial terms and payments to Girona

Under the terms announced, Girona will receive €7 million from Birmingham as the transfer fee, in addition to the €500,000 already paid when Solís joined on loan in January. That brings the total immediate cash Girona collects from the player’s time away to €7.5 million. Girona originally paid €6 million to sign Solís from Atlético Nacional in the summer of 2023, making this sequence of transactions a notable financial turnaround for the Catalan club. The sale reduces Girona’s wage bill and frees up a roster slot while securing a modest profit compared with the initial outlay when accounting for the loan fee.

Solís’ Girona spell and adaptation challenges

Solís arrived in Girona in summer 2023 as a highly rated signing from Atlético Nacional, but his adaptation to La Liga proved difficult. The 21-year-old faced injuries and inconsistent selection under coach Míchel, which hindered his ability to establish a rhythm in Spain’s top flight. Girona enjoyed a historic 2023/24 season, finishing third with 81 points, yet Solís found limited space to progress amid a competitive squad. Those setbacks contributed to the club’s decision to arrange a January loan that included an option for Birmingham to buy.

Loan spell in England revived Solís’ form

Once in the Championship, Solís benefited from more regular minutes and a coaching environment that appeared to match his strengths more closely. His performances drew positive attention and convinced Birmingham’s technical staff that a permanent move was justified. The player’s increased confidence and match sharpness in England contrasted with the interrupted appearances he experienced at Girona. That revival underlined why Birmingham chose to activate the purchase clause and invest in his continued development.

Player profile and future potential

At 21 years old, Solís is viewed as a player with significant upside rather than a finished product, and Birmingham’s acquisition reflects a bet on future growth. He is a midfielder with a blend of technical ability and mobility suited to a high-tempo game, traits that translated better in the Championship than they did in his limited La Liga outings. Coaches who worked with him in England cited his work rate and tactical adaptability as reasons for optimism. The move gives Solís the platform to focus on steady improvement with consistent playing time and a club committed to his progression.

Consequences for Girona’s squad planning

Girona’s decision to sanction the sale removes a player who had fallen out of consistent contention and converts a partly sunk cost into usable funds. The club will now look to reinvest in areas of the squad where they need depth as they prepare for their next domestic and European commitments. Offloading Solís also closes a chapter on a transfer that did not yield the expected sporting returns in Catalonia. Girona retain the option to redeploy resources toward players who better fit the tactical profile Míchel and his staff intend to deploy going forward.

This permanent move opens a new phase in Solís’ career as he transitions from a promising but unsettled spell in La Liga to a club that has expressed clear confidence in his trajectory. Birmingham will expect him to build on the positive loan performances and to develop into a consistent option in midfield. For Girona, the transaction is a pragmatic resolution to a transfer that did not meet expectations on the pitch, while providing financial flexibility. The coming season will be pivotal for Solís as he seeks to validate Birmingham’s investment and establish himself as a continuing presence at senior level.
