Tsegay receives a four-month suspension

Gudaf Tsegay has been handed a four-month period of ineligibility after admitting the presence of a prohibited substance in an out-of-competition test. The decision follows a positive result for a metabolite of Letrozole and a negotiated case resolution with anti-doping authorities.

The Athletics Integrity Unit said the sanction was "considered appropriate" under rules that take into account no fault or negligence, and the suspension has been backdated to start on June 1 and will end on September 30. The penalty removes Tsegay from competition for the specified window while preserving the possibility of her return once the ban expires.

Positive test detected a Letrozole metabolite

Laboratory analysis identified a metabolite of Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor that appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list. Letrozole reduces estrogen levels and is principally used in clinical settings to treat certain forms of breast cancer.

The presence of that metabolite in an out-of-competition sample triggered the AIU notification process in late January, prompting an immediate response from Tsegay and her medical team. Officials treating the result as a potential anti-doping rule violation opened the standard procedures for examination, explanation and documentation.

Medical treatment and immediate disclosure by athlete

Tsegay, 29, responded to the AIU notification the day after she was informed and disclosed that she had been prescribed Letrozole for a diagnosed medical condition. She supplied supporting medical records and evidence to explain the presence of the substance in her system.

Her prompt admission and the provision of medical documentation were important elements in the authorities’ assessment of her degree of fault. The AIU noted the athlete’s cooperation and the timely submission of explanatory material as mitigating factors in determining the sanction.

Therapeutic Use Exemption application and retroactive request

Following the notification, Tsegay submitted a therapeutic use exemption application to World Athletics in February, seeking formal clearance for the medication under medical grounds. World Athletics confirmed that the treatment aligned with WADA’s international standards for TUEs when properly filed and documented in advance.

However, an application to be granted a retroactive TUE for exceptional reasons was rejected by WADA, which led to the athlete entering a case resolution agreement with the AIU and WADA. The rejection of a retroactive exemption is a key factor that limited the authorities’ options and shaped the agreed sanction.

AIU and WADA explain sanctioning rationale

The four-month length of the ban was based on several considerations: Tsegay’s low degree of fault, her immediate admission of the violation, and the recognition that her treatment would have met international TUE standards had the exemption been requested beforehand. Those combined elements allowed for a reduced period of ineligibility under provisions for no fault or negligence.

Officials emphasized that the sanction reflected both the need to enforce the anti-doping code and to account for the athlete’s cooperation and medical justification. The agreement notes that the athlete’s conduct after notification—submitting documentation and seeking retrospective clearance—contributed to a lighter sanction than would normally follow a positive result for a prohibited substance.

Implications for titles, rankings and competition calendar

Tsegay, who claimed the 5,000m world title in 2022 and the 10,000m crown in 2023 and won an Olympic bronze at Tokyo 2020, will miss competitions falling inside the June 1 to September 30 ineligibility window. The short suspension means her major titles remain intact, and there is no automatic disqualification of past results reported in the AIU statement.

Athletics federations and meet organizers will adjust entry lists for events scheduled during the ban period, and national team selectors will exclude her from team rosters while the ineligibility stands. The ruling also serves as a reminder to athletes about the procedural requirement to seek a TUE in advance when treatment involves substances prohibited in sport.

Reactions from the athlete’s camp and wider athletics community

Representatives for Tsegay described the case as a medical matter that was handled transparently once the positive result emerged. They reiterated that the medication had been prescribed for a legitimate health condition and that documentation was provided promptly after the AIU’s notification.

Within the wider athletics community, responses have been measured, with observers noting the importance of clear communication and timely TUE applications to avoid similar situations. Anti-doping experts highlighted that the outcome reflects the code’s capacity to differentiate between intentional doping and legitimate medical treatment when evidence and cooperation are present.

Gudaf Tsegay’s suspension underscores the strict procedural expectations placed on elite athletes regarding medication and therapeutic exemptions, while also illustrating the systems in place to consider mitigating circumstances and medical necessity when they arise.
