Automatic offside chip to be embedded in match balls for Spain’s top flight next season

Spain’s Primera División will deploy an automatic offside chip in match balls next season, alongside AI-driven referee evaluation and appointment systems, in a phased rollout affecting Segunda later.

Spain’s top domestic league has confirmed the introduction of an automatic offside chip embedded in match balls for the upcoming season, a measure intended to replace the existing semi-automated offside process. The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) has informed clubs in the Primera División and will implement the new system initially at the top level. The automatic offside chip is designed to produce a definitive offside signal by tracking the ball’s exact position relative to players in real time.

Spanish top flight to introduce automatic offside chip next season

The CTA announced that every official match ball used in Primera División fixtures will carry a positioning chip that communicates directly with the refereeing systems. The change aims to eliminate ambiguity in crowded penalty-area situations where the previous semi-automated technology sometimes failed to deliver a clear determination. Clubs, match officials and broadcast partners have already been briefed on operational procedures and data flows tied to the new ball-based system.

League officials said the automatic offside chip will feed positional data into the existing VAR infrastructure and serve as a primary data source for offside calls rather than a supplementary aid. The move is framed as a way to speed up decision-making and reduce the number of manually adjudicated close calls that have drawn criticism. Operational tests and training sessions are scheduled in the weeks before the new season to ensure VAR teams and on-field officials are synchronized with the new signals.

End of semi-automated offside and the Metropolitano incident

The adoption of the automatic offside chip effectively ends the semi-automated offside era in Spain’s top division, a system that produced contentious moments during the past campaign. One high-profile episode at the Metropolitano, during a match between Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona, highlighted the limits of the semi-automated approach when a mass of players obscured accurate positional assessment. In that instance, the automated assist could not render a precise determination and the offside calculation had to be completed manually, prompting scrutiny from clubs and the public.

Officials cite that kind of uncertainty as a principal reason for transitioning to a ball-centric tracking method that improves positional granularity. The new system is intended to work in complex congestion scenarios by registering the ball’s micro-movements and cross-referencing them with player telemetry. By anchoring the offside calculation to the ball’s precise locus at the instant of the pass, referees and VAR operators should face fewer instances of indeterminate evidence.

How the ball chip and TV Server will determine offsides

The automatic offside chip will transmit continuous spatial coordinates that are integrated into the match operations platform known as the TV Server. The TV Server will use the ball’s coordinates together with calibrated player tracking to compute offside lines automatically and present the result to VAR operators and on-field referees. Separately configured TV feeds for assistants will provide synchronized replay angles and the same telemetry overlays, creating unified evidence packages for each contested play.

VAR operators will receive an automated recommendation based on the chip’s timestamped data, after which the referee can adopt, review, or overrule the call following standard protocols. League technicians expect the system to cut the time required for offside reviews, while also producing a traceable log that can be used in post-match assessments. Broadcast producers will also be able to display the chip-derived data on-screen, subject to league approval for live presentation during matches.

AI to reshape referee evaluation and appointments

Alongside the automatic offside chip, the CTA will introduce artificial intelligence in two distinct refereeing areas: performance evaluation and appointment selection. The evaluation platform will ingest match footage, TV Server telemetry, and decision data, applying algorithmic criteria to score and analyze referee performance. The system is expected to identify patterns, recurring decision-making trends, and areas for targeted training, providing a more data-driven basis for assessments.

AI will also be used to assist in referee appointments for each round of fixtures by matching official profiles, recent form, and historical performance against fixture demands. The committee emphasized that human discretion will remain central to final appointments, but that AI tools will streamline selection and reduce inadvertent mismatches. The CTA has indicated that these algorithms will be overseen by a technical panel to ensure transparency and guard against bias in assignments.

Phased rollout and financial considerations for Segunda División

The automatic offside chip will not be introduced simultaneously across all professional tiers; Segunda División clubs will enter a gradual rollout in subsequent seasons. League executives cite significant cost implications tied to equipping every match ball, upgrading stadium receivers, and expanding tracking infrastructure as the principal constraint. The phased approach intends to prioritize top-flight fixtures where broadcast value and commercial resources are greater.

Officials have begun cost assessments and funding discussions to subsidize the wider roll-out, and there are plans for pilot programs in selected Segunda fixtures to validate deployment in different stadium environments. Clubs in the second tier will be kept informed of timelines and technical requirements, and the CTA has committed to publishing clear milestones ahead of any broader implementation. The league described the staged strategy as a pragmatic balance between technological ambition and fiscal reality.

Operational changes on matchday and support for on-field referees

The CTA will also introduce a new matchday support figure — a coach for each referee — who will accompany the official to the stadium to provide immediate performance feedback and operational coaching. That role is intended to complement AI-driven evaluation with in-person guidance aimed at efficiency and consistency. The presence of this coach is expected to improve pre-match preparation and post-match debriefs, ensuring that referees receive both data-led and experiential input.

In addition, the TV of assistants function will create dedicated review channels focused on the work of assistant referees and the VAR support team. Those channels will mirror the TV Server’s output but emphasize offside lines, touchline decisions, and assistant positioning. Together with the coach role and AI insights, referees will have an expanded support structure intended to reduce error rates and accelerate learning cycles across the officiating corps.

The introduction of the automatic offside chip and AI tools marks a significant technological shift in Spanish professional football, aiming to increase the precision and speed of offside decisions while modernizing referee management and evaluation. The CTA has framed the package of changes as an investment in competitive integrity and operational clarity, with a phased timetable designed to balance performance benefits against implementation costs. As testing and training begin ahead of the new season, clubs, officials and broadcasters will monitor real-world performance closely to assess whether the new systems deliver the promised improvements.
