Leipzig move into third after decisive home victory

RB Leipzig strengthened their bid for a top-four finish with a commanding 3-1 win over Union Berlin in the matchday 31 curtain-raiser of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. The victory moved RB Leipzig up to third in the table and leaves them on the verge of securing Champions League qualification for 2026/27. Ole Werner’s side controlled large portions of the match at the Red Bull Arena, converting pressure into goals while managing the game comfortably after taking the initiative in the first half.

The result was notable for the manner in which RB Leipzig combined youthful creativity and clinical finishing to break down a Union side that had shown resilience in recent weeks. Leipzig’s balanced attacking display — featuring a summer signing’s first goal, a composed striker finish and a moment of ingenuity from Yan Diomande — removed any lingering doubts about their attacking depth. For Union Berlin, the defeat compounds a run of inconsistent results and leaves them with questions to answer as the season reaches its closing stages.

Early saves and Union’s initial resistance

Union goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow was the standout figure in the opening stages, keeping Leipzig at bay with a series of strong interventions. Leipzig fashioned two particularly dangerous openings inside the opening ten minutes; in both cases Rønnow reacted sharply to parry initial efforts and Union defenders scrambled to clear follow-up chances. Those early escapes, however, masked underlying issues in Union’s defensive shape as Leipzig probed down the flanks and through quick vertical passes.

Union’s attacking intent was more intermittent than cohesive, and their most obvious threat—pacey forward Oliver Burke—found himself isolated too often to influence the game consistently. Long balls aimed at his runs were either mistimed or met with offside flags, limiting Union’s counter-attacking potential. While Rønnow’s early displays kept the scoreline level, the balance of chances increasingly favoured Leipzig as the half progressed.

Finkgräfe and Romulu strike in quick succession

The breakthrough arrived shortly after the quarter-hour mark when Leipzig capitalised on a moment of indecision in the Union penalty area. A loose clearance presented Max Finkgräfe with space around 16 metres out, and the summer arrival from Köln produced a first-time finish that curled into the corner to give Leipzig the lead. The finish marked Finkgräfe’s maiden goal for RB Leipzig and underlined the immediate impact the club’s recruitment has produced this season.

Almost immediately after the opener, Leipzig exploited another defensive lapse to double their advantage. A misplaced header back towards Rønnow left the Union keeper stranded and allowed Romulu to nip in, lift the ball over the goalkeeper and make it 2-0. The two-goal swing in quick succession effectively decided the first half and handed Werner’s side a firm foothold in the contest, leaving Union searching for answers as they headed to the break.

Rønnow injury and Klaus’ unexpected debut

Union’s afternoon was further complicated when Frederik Rønnow was forced off with an injury before half-time, bringing 32-year-old Carl Klaus into the fray for his Bundesliga debut. Klaus, who had not played competitively in nearly two years, was tested early and responded with a string of important stops, including a headed attempt tipped onto the crossbar. His arrival curtailed what might otherwise have become a more damaging first-half scoreline for Union.

Despite Klaus’ early bright moments — two comfortable saves and a handful of confident clearances — the substitute could not stem the tide completely once Leipzig regained their composure after the interval. The enforced change disrupted Union’s continuity and left the visitors increasingly reliant on moments of individual endeavour rather than structured attacking play. Injuries at critical moments compounded Union’s tactical problems against a side with multiple goal outlets.

Diomande’s creative brilliance seals the contest

Yan Diomande produced the defining sequence of the match in the second half, combining vision and technical poise to set up Leipzig’s third goal. In the 63rd minute Ridle Baku initiated an attack on the right; Diomande received the ball, shielded it under pressure and executed a quick, inventive flick to return the ball into Baku’s path after drawing defenders towards him. Baku’s composed finish left substitute goalkeeper Carl Klaus with little chance and effectively sealed the contest for RB Leipzig.

Diomande’s performance extended beyond the assist, as the 19-year-old logged a high work rate across midfield with multiple successful dribbles, a robust tally of sprints and a strong presence in duels and passing sequences. The teenager’s combination of ball progression and creative awareness disrupted Union’s defensive structure and created further openings that Leipzig nearly converted. His influence typified a Leipzig side that can blend youthful attacking verve with experienced finishing.

Union find a late consolation through Doekhi

Union Berlin managed a late set-piece reply when Danilho Doekhi scored from a corner in the 78th minute, pulling a goal back that offered little change to the result but provided a rare attacking highlight for the visitors. The goal was Doekhi’s first of 2026 and his seventh across all competitions this season, an impressive return for a centre-back and a reminder of his threat from aerial situations. Doekhi’s finish did little to alter the balance of the match, but it did underline Union’s dependence on set-piece moments to manufacture scoring opportunities.

For Union, the consolation offered by Doekhi will be short-lived if structural issues are not addressed ahead of the final stretch of the campaign. The guests created few clear-cut chances from open play, and their tactical adjustments after the break produced limited variation in the final third. With the transfer window looming and contract discussions already in focus for some key players, Union face an off-season that could prove decisive for their medium-term ambitions.

Implications for Leipzig’s ambitions and Union’s outlook

The result narrows the gap on the Bundesliga summit and places RB Leipzig in a strong position as they chase Champions League qualification next season. Climbing into third gives Werner’s side a psychological and practical advantage as the season moves into its final fixtures, and the squad depth shown by the likes of Finkgräfe and Diomande gives Leipzig multiple avenues to score. This victory frames Leipzig as one of the most complete teams in the division, capable of combining individual moments of quality with consistent collective execution.

For Union Berlin, the defeat magnifies questions about squad balance, injury resilience and options in attack beyond reliance on pace and set-piece potency. The performance highlighted areas for improvement in build-up play and positional cohesion, issues that will be examined by coach Marie-Louise Eta and her backroom staff ahead of the close of the season. Union’s capacity to recruit and retain players, and to reshuffle tactical priorities efficiently, will be central to determining whether they can stabilise and progress in the coming campaign.

RB Leipzig now prepare to carry momentum into their next fixtures while Union must regroup and address the vulnerabilities exposed at the Red Bull Arena. Managers on both sides will weigh the tactical lessons from this fixture as the Bundesliga season enters its decisive phase, with European qualification and domestic positioning still very much in play.
