Lady Elephants strike early

Côte d’Ivoire arrived at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca seeking a strong start to their first WAFCON campaign in 12 years, and they did not wait long to announce themselves. Rebecca Elloh converted a penalty in the seventh minute to give the Lady Elephants an early lead and calm the home crowd. That opening goal set the tone for a first-half display defined by pace, directness and clinical finishing. The early momentum allowed Côte d’Ivoire to control possession and territory for long stretches.

The early breakthrough also highlighted the value of experience in the squad, with Elloh one of the few players carrying previous continental finals minutes. Her composure from the spot underlined the tactical confidence coach Reynald Pedros has instilled since arriving in Morocco. The goal settled the team and invited a more incisive attacking pattern from the Ivorians. Burkina Faso struggled to impose themselves as the hosts pressed and probed.

Konan double puts game beyond reach

Ines Konan extended the advantage in the 14th minute after a well-worked move that began with Rosemonde Kouassi’s intelligent approach play. Konan’s first strike forced Burkina Faso onto the back foot and opened up clear space for the Ivorian attack. She then grabbed her second just before the half when Nsira Ouedraogo played a precise pass that Konan finished with composure. The 3-0 cushion at half-time was the product of sustained pressure and a clinical edge in the final third.

The brace elevated Konan into immediate prominence in Group B and provided her side with a healthy margin to manage the second half. Côte d’Ivoire’s ability to convert chances contrasted with Burkina Faso’s struggles to create meaningful danger in the opening 45 minutes. Tactical execution and effective rotation of attacking runs repeatedly pulled the Lady Stallions out of position. By half-time, Pedros’ team had delivered the kind of attacking clarity they sought coming into the tournament.

Burkina Faso briefly resurges

Burkina Faso, making only their second appearance at the WAFCON finals, responded quickly after the break when Adama Congo cut the deficit in the 46th minute. Balkissa Sawadogo supplied the assist as the Lady Stallions showed the spirit their coach Issa Balbone had promised before kick-off. That goal offered a glimpse of the resilience and counter-attacking threat Burkina Faso can bring against higher-ranked opponents. For a brief period the visitors looked capable of mounting a comeback.

The rebound was a reminder that the match was not finished and that small margins separate pressure from opportunity at this level. Burkina Faso’s early second-half energy kept Côte d’Ivoire honest and tested the Ivorians’ defensive concentration. However, the response lasted only a short time as the hosts regrouped and reasserted their control. The balance of the contest returned firmly to the Lady Elephants within a quarter of an hour.

Ouedraogo seals decisive victory

Nsira Ouedraogo added the fourth goal in the 56th minute to extinguish any serious hope of a Burkina Faso turnaround and to underline her own contribution to the team’s attacking plan. Her finish capped a strong collective display and ensured a comfortable scoreline at the final whistle. Ouedraogo had been prominent throughout, offering energy in wide areas and linking effectively with the forwards. The goal reflected both individual quality and the cohesion of a team that had prepared diligently ahead of the finals.

That strike allowed Côte d’Ivoire to manage the remainder of the match with authority, shifting between control and tempo as required. Pedros was able to protect his lead while allowing young players to gain valuable minutes in a major tournament setting. The 4-1 result stands as both a statement of intent and a reward for the tactical preparation evident early in the tournament. For Burkina Faso, the concession exposed areas for defensive tightening before their next fixture.

Pedros’ preparation and squad balance praised

The victory will offer satisfaction to coach Reynald Pedros, who prioritised physical readiness and a cohesive training camp ahead of the finals. His approach blended experienced performers like Rebecca Elloh with younger, dynamic attackers such as Konan and Ouedraogo. That mix produced both composure from set pieces and spontaneity in open play, characteristics visible in the first-half barrage. Players reported arriving early in Morocco to acclimatise and the result suggested those measures paid off.

Captain Bernadette Amani Kakounan had spoken before the match about the emotion of returning to WAFCON, and the team matched that sentiment with a committed and purposeful display. Pedros’ tactical clarity — pressing triggers, wide overloads and quick transitions — created repeated problems for Burkina Faso. The coaching staff’s focus on match simulation and set-piece routines was evident in the penalty conversion and the fluid attacking sequences. Overall, Côte d’Ivoire presented a unit that looks equipped for the group stage challenge.

Group B dynamics shift after opening day

The result also had immediate consequences for the composition of Group B following an earlier surprise in the same pool. Tanzania stunned defending champions South Africa 2-1 in the day’s other match, an outcome that injected unpredictability into the standings. Côte d’Ivoire’s comprehensive win places them in an advantageous position as teams navigate a condensed schedule with qualification to the knockout phase at stake. With the top two in each group progressing, goal difference and early points carry enhanced importance.

Group B now presents multiple pathways to the quarter-finals, and the Lady Elephants have taken a clear step toward control of one of those routes. Burkina Faso will need to regroup quickly and target points in their remaining fixtures if they are to contest for the top two slots. The opening-day results emphasise that no opponent can be taken lightly, and that momentum across matchdays will be decisive. Tournament management, rotation and injury prevention will figure prominently in coaches’ plans going forward.

Côte d’Ivoire leave Casablanca with a statement victory and a favorable position in Group B, but the team must maintain consistency across the group stage to convert the strong start into progression. Burkina Faso can take heart from their second-half response but must address defensive lapses exposed in the first period. Both teams will now turn their attention to upcoming opponents and the tactical adjustments required to meet the shifting demands of the competition.
