Uganda U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier: Queen Cranes lose 2-1 in Accra but keep hopes alive with crucial away goal

Uganda’s U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier remains finely poised after the Queen Cranes fell 2-1 to Ghana in the first leg in Accra, but a crucial away goal gives them the advantage of opportunity ahead of the return. The result at Accra Sports Stadium saw Agnes Nabukenya open the scoring for Uganda before Ghana rallied after the break to take a narrow lead. The tie will be decided in Kampala on May 9 at Fufa Stadium, where Uganda must overturn a one-goal deficit to reach Poland 2026.

Nabukenya breaks the deadlock for Uganda

Agnes Nabukenya produced a composed finish in the 32nd minute to give the visiting Queen Cranes the lead, converting a well-worked attack that underlined Uganda’s early organization. The goal arrived after a disciplined opening spell in which Uganda controlled their shape and probed Ghana’s defensive lines with patient passing.

That strike proved particularly valuable because it delivered an away goal that could be decisive under the tie rules, and it gave the Ugandan side a psychological boost heading into halftime. The scoreline reflected a period in which the visitors managed the game intelligently and looked comfortable despite the pressures of the Accra crowd.

Goalkeeper Nakirya’s early intervention set the tone

Lilian Nakirya played a key role from the first whistle, producing a confident punch to clear a dangerous Ghanaian corner and easing early pressure on her back line. Her intervention kept Uganda level in the opening minutes and allowed the Queen Cranes to settle into their defensive plan.

Nakirya’s presence between the posts gave the visitors the platform to defend in numbers and launch measured attacks, and her command of the penalty area was a noticeable factor throughout the first half. That control helped Uganda protect their lead through halftime and enter the second period with belief that they could hold the advantage.

Ghana respond after the interval through Mensah

Ghana emerged from the break with increased urgency, pressing higher and asking more questions of Uganda’s defence, and their persistence was rewarded in the 56th minute. Priscilla Mensah found the equaliser midway through the second half, shifting momentum in the hosts’ favour and forcing the match into a more open contest.

The leveller altered the tactical landscape, with Ghana probing for a winner while Uganda reverted to a compact shape, seeking to protect the fragile advantage the away goal provided. From that point, the contest became a battle of stamina and concentration as both teams looked to tip the tie before the return leg.

Late Abesik strike hands Ghana narrow advantage

As the match entered its closing stages, a lapse in concentration from Uganda allowed Latifa Abesik to break the deadlock in the 86th minute and hand Ghana a narrow 2-1 lead. The late winner underscored the margins in two-legged knockout football and left Uganda with a small but meaningful deficit to overturn.

Despite the late setback, Uganda’s resilience was evident in how they regrouped after conceding, and the team maintained defensive discipline through the final minutes. The narrow scoreline nevertheless gives Ghana a slender edge heading to Kampala, where the atmosphere and conditions will present new challenges.

Tactical priorities for Uganda ahead of the return leg

Head coach and staff will now focus on sharpening both defensive concentration and attacking variety ahead of the May 9 return, with the away goal affording Uganda an avenue to progress if they can manage a win at home. Tactical revisions are likely to include quicker transitions from defence to attack and clearer routes into the penalty area to avoid being shut out again.

Set-piece delivery and late-game game management will also be areas of emphasis after the concession so late in Accra, while rotation choices and recovery for key players will matter with limited recovery time. Uganda will need to balance attacking intent with the need to nullify Ghana’s counter threats if they are to overturn the aggregate scoreline in front of a home crowd.

What qualification to Poland 2026 would mean

The winner on aggregate will secure a spot at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2026 in Poland, a global tournament that would represent a major step for either nation’s youth programme. For Uganda, qualification would mark a milestone achievement and validate the investment in youth development and coaching structures that have produced the current generation.

Ghana, meanwhile, will look to maintain its strong regional pedigree and book a place on the world stage, using the narrow margin they hold to approach the return leg with cautious confidence. With away goals in play and penalties as the final decider if required, both teams know that the outcome in Kampala will be decisive.

The return leg at Fufa Stadium on May 9 offers Uganda the platform to flip the tie and secure passage to Poland, while Ghana will travel with the objective of protecting their lead. Both sides have reasons for belief, and the match promises to be tense, tactical and closely contested.
