Rwanda will use the June FIFA international window to stage a Morocco-based training camp and two international friendlies as part of an intensive build-up to continental qualifiers later this year. The Rwanda friendlies programme, confirmed by Rwanda Football Federation secretary general Bonnie Mugabe, will include a 10-day camp from June 1 to June 10 and matches against Tanzania and Comoros. The dual focus on the senior team and the U23 side is designed to sharpen tactical plans, expand squad depth and fast-track integration of new players ahead of Africa Cup of Nations and U23 Olympic qualifying fixtures.

Rwanda schedules Morocco training camp for June window

The Rwandan federation has planned a concentrated training camp in Morocco running from June 1 to June 10, bringing both senior and U23 groups together for preparation. Training bases in Agadir and Marrakech have been selected to provide high-quality facilities, controlled conditions and a neutral setting for tactical work. The decision to host the camp abroad reflects an emphasis on focused training away from domestic distractions and on repetition of game scenarios in facilities accustomed to elite teams.

Camp duration and structure are intended to allow the technical staff to evaluate players across multiple training cycles and in match-like situations. Coaches will use the period to establish rhythm, assess physical readiness and trial tactical variations ahead of competitive windows. The timetable also leaves room for recovery and set-piece practice, which the federation views as priorities in close-run qualifying campaigns.

Opponents confirmed as Tanzania and Comoros

Rwanda will meet Tanzania first, before taking on Comoros in the scheduled friendlies, giving the coaching staff two markedly different tests. Tanzania is known in the region for physicality and intensity, posing a test of Amavubi’s ability to manage duels and transitions. Comoros, by contrast, brings organization and defensive discipline, reflecting the progress the island nation has made in recent competitive cycles.

Playing these familiar regional opponents offers a useful benchmark for Rwanda to measure improvements and identify areas that need work. Both fixtures are being treated as strategic assessments rather than merely tune-up matches, with the federation emphasising the value of competitive minutes under international refereeing and varied tactical demands.

Technical staff priorities and tactical testing

The coaching staff will prioritise evaluating squad depth, experimenting with formations and integrating emerging talent into the senior setup. Staff intend to use the friendlies to test different defensive shapes, midfield link-up patterns and attacking combinations that could be deployed in AFCON qualifiers. The dual involvement of the U23 unit provides an opportunity to fast-track promising young players into the senior environment and measure their readiness for higher-level competition.

Tactical sessions will reportedly alternate between intensive small-group work and full-match simulations, enabling coaches to observe player decision-making under pressure. Set-piece routines and transitional play are expected to feature heavily, with staff using video analysis to refine individual roles. Such targeted preparation is designed to reduce uncertainty and increase cohesion when formal qualifiers begin.

Camp logistics and venue advantages in Agadir and Marrakech

Agadir and Marrakech were chosen for their modern training infrastructure and climatic conditions that mirror competitive environments the team may face in Africa. The two cities provide a mix of training pitches, recovery amenities and accommodation suited to international teams, minimizing logistical disruption. Using multiple venues within the same country allows the federation to vary session conditions while maintaining a centralised support setup for medical and analytical staff.

Holding the camp in Morocco also simplifies arranging friendly opponents and controlling travel schedules, providing the technical team with reliable local facilities and privacy for closed-door sessions. The federation has arranged for coordinated sports science support and medical coverage to ensure players can be assessed and returned to peak condition between sessions and matches.

Relevance for AFCON and U23 Olympic qualifying campaigns

The friendlies come as Rwanda prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled in September and the AFCON U23/Olympic qualifiers slated for October. The federation sees the June window as a critical rehearsal period to close tactical gaps and finalize group roles before competitive play. Outcomes from the matches and training camp will feed directly into selection priorities and match plans for the qualifying matches later in the year.

Officials emphasise that while results in the friendlies are not the sole objective, competitive performance will influence final decisions on player selection and tactical emphasis. The June programme is therefore positioned as the last extended opportunity to test combinations and recover players physically ahead of the qualification calendar.

Selection, squad depth and pathways for young players

Rwanda’s inclusion of the U23 side alongside the senior team signals a deliberate pathway approach to development and succession planning. The federation aims to expose promising U23 players to senior-team standards and expectations, accelerating their transition where appropriate. This approach also creates depth options for the national team, allowing coaches to draw upon a larger pool in case of injuries or form fluctuations during qualifiers.

Staff will monitor fitness, discipline and adaptability as key selection criteria, with particular attention to players who can fulfil multiple roles. The friendlies will also serve as auditions for domestic standouts and overseas-based players who have been on the periphery of national selection. The federation’s plan includes follow-up assessments to ensure continuity and to manage player workloads across club and country commitments.

Rwanda’s technical leadership has framed the June friendlies and Morocco camp as an opportunity to marry tactical objectives with long-term squad building, giving coaches both immediate performance data and a clearer view of developmental prospects. The federation expects the programme to yield actionable insights ahead of September and October’s crucial qualifying fixtures.

Looking forward, the outcomes of the friendlies will shape selection policies, tactical planning and player management strategies as Rwanda moves into competitive qualification. The federation’s approach emphasises strategic preparation, integration of youth, and the tailoring of match plans to specific opponent profiles.
