The Washington Commanders staged the Kullna Commanders Youth Football Camp at the Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub on January 31, bringing a large, diverse group of children and families together for a day of flag football and community engagement. The Washington Commanders youth football camp Abu Dhabi event featured structured on-field coaching led by accredited instructors, combined with festival-style activations aimed at promoting sport, movement and family participation. Organizers said the activation was designed as a grassroots initiative to build local interest in flag football while offering safe, fun opportunities for skill development and social connection.

Attendance and diversity on the pitch

Two hundred young participants took part in the camp, representing more than three dozen nationalities and more than fifty schools from across Abu Dhabi, reflecting the multicultural fabric of the city. Organizers emphasized that the diversity of attendees — both in nationality and school background — was one of the event’s most visible successes, illustrating the appeal of flag football beyond traditional markets. Families and community members also joined in large numbers, with more than 250 supporters reported to have attended the sidelines and activation zones during the day.

Coaching structure and on-field curriculum

The camp delivered a compact, targeted coaching program built around ten interactive drills focused on coordination, spatial awareness and teamwork rather than contact. Fifteen coaches ran the sessions, all operating under coaching frameworks provided by the NFL Flag Football Director and led in curriculum development by Coach Tom LaNeve, an established figure associated with the official NFL Flag Football rule set. The sessions were intentionally structured to be inclusive for beginners while offering progression pathways for children with prior experience, allowing coaches to adapt drills to varying technical levels and age groups.

Festival activations and family engagement

Beyond the pitch, the activation took on a festival atmosphere designed to keep families entertained and engaged throughout the day. Event zones included creative stations where children could decorate footballs, a smoothie bar promoting healthy refreshments, and an interactive photo booth to capture memories of the day’s activities. A barbecue and drinks area served spectators and extended the community feel of the event, while additional low-key activities kept younger siblings occupied and allowed parents to observe coaching sessions comfortably.

Feedback from parents and local stakeholders

Post-event feedback from parents and guardians underscored the camp’s combination of structure and accessibility, with multiple families praising the quality of instruction and the welcoming environment. Attendees highlighted the coaches’ willingness to mentor and the organized flow of the day, and several families expressed interest in recurring programs and follow-up training in the UAE. Local partners and venue representatives also noted the event’s operational smoothness, citing effective scheduling and the ability to handle a large, diverse participant pool without compromising safety or participant experience.

Strategic goals and long-term development in the UAE

The Commanders framed the Kullna initiative as part of a deliberate push to foster grassroots development of flag football and community sport in the UAE, positioning the camp as a platform for longer-term engagement. Officials indicated the one-day clinic was intended to seed interest, identify local coaching talent, and establish relationships with schools and community groups that could support sustained programming. The structure of the day — mixing coaching, festival activations and family engagement — was presented as a blueprint for future activations that aim to balance skill development with community-building.

Operational lessons and next-steps for programming

Organizers took particular interest in operational lessons learned, from onboarding and coach training logistics to managing the flow of families through activation zones to minimize queuing and maximize active participation. Those lessons will inform how follow-up clinics are scheduled, how volunteer coaches are recruited and trained, and how community partners are integrated into promotional outreach. The Washington Commanders signaled an intention to return with additional training programs and repeated activations that build on this initial footprint and provide regular opportunities for children across the UAE to engage with flag football.

The Kullna Commanders Youth Football Camp in Abu Dhabi succeeded as both a developmental clinic and a public engagement event, blending targeted coaching with community-oriented programming to create a memorable experience for participants and their families. The event’s mix of expert-led drills, family-friendly activations and a clear focus on inclusivity has laid the groundwork for future events aimed at expanding the sport’s presence in the region.
