Rwandan attacking midfielder David Niyo has completed a move to Ukrainian Premier League club NK Veres Rivne, the 19-year-old confirmed after arriving in Ukraine to begin pre-season preparations. Niyo traveled from Rwanda via Entebbe and Dubai and will join the squad as Veres builds toward the new campaign, which kicks off on July 29. The signing marks the midfielder’s first professional contract and a step into top-flight European football.

Niyo Completes Transfer and Arrives for Pre-season

Niyo departed Rwanda on Tuesday morning and flew to Ukraine on an Emirates connection, arriving to link up with his new teammates ahead of the upcoming season. The young midfielder will participate in the full pre-season programme as Veres Rivne refines its squad for the 2026 campaign. Club officials have indicated confidence in Niyo’s potential after his trial and training performances.

The move formalizes a pathway from Rwanda’s domestic scene to a recognized European league for one of the country’s brightest prospects. For Niyo, the arrival represents an opportunity to secure regular minutes at a higher competitive level and to adapt to the demands of professional football in Europe.

Impressive Trial and Turkey Camp Convince Veres

Niyo earned his contract after a trial period that included almost two weeks of training with Veres during the club’s camp in Turkey. He featured in a series of friendly matches during that spell, performances that reportedly helped convince the coaching staff to offer him a deal. The club’s staff praised his technical skill and work rate during sessions and matches.

The teenager combined individual training routines with tactical sessions at the camp, demonstrating adaptability and a readiness to learn. Those displays under overseas training conditions were a decisive factor in Veres deciding to bring him on for a full pre-season.

Player Profile: Left-footed Playmaker with Direct Impact

A left-footed attacking midfielder by trade, Niyo developed through the APR FC academy system before moving on loan to Kiyovu Sports to gain first-team experience. During that loan he scored four goals and provided four assists, performances that earned him several Man of the Match awards. His versatility in advanced midfield roles and vision in the final third mark him as a player with creative and goal-threatening qualities.

Coaches and observers have noted his discipline and willingness to undertake extra work as drivers of his rapid rise. Niyo has balanced individual ball work and conditioning with team sessions, a routine that helped him transition from academy football to senior competition.

Contract Terms and APR FC’s Interest Secured

Under the terms agreed between the clubs, APR FC will receive a transfer fee and will retain 20 percent of any future resale of the player. The sell-on clause ensures APR benefit from any further development and potential moves down the line. Those financial details reflect a common arrangement for young talents moving from academies in Africa to European clubs.

For APR FC, the transfer represents both a sporting achievement and a financial outcome that could support continued youth development. The structure of the deal highlights the growing commercial pathways connecting East African academies with European markets.

National Team Call-Up and International Exposure

Niyo’s club breakthrough was preceded by recognition at national level, with the midfielder receiving his first call-up to the Rwanda senior squad earlier this year. He took part in a national team training camp held in Egypt in June, gaining exposure to international coaching environments and competing alongside the country’s established players. That experience likely contributed to his readiness for the move abroad.

National team staff have monitored his progress through domestic performances and his loan spell, viewing the step to Europe as beneficial for his long-term development and potential contributions to Rwanda’s senior side. Continued international involvement would be expected if he secures regular club minutes.

Expectations and Integration at Veres Rivne

Veres Rivne, founded in 1957 and competing in the Ukrainian Premier League, will be looking to strengthen its squad ahead of the season start on July 29. The club believes in integrating promising talent alongside experienced professionals to maintain competitiveness in the league. Niyo arrives with an ambition to make an immediate impact while learning the tactical and physical demands of the Ukrainian top flight.

Coaching staff have indicated Niyo will be given time to adapt, with pre-season structured to build fitness, tactical understanding, and cohesion with teammates. For the player, the primary goals will be to establish himself in training, translate his attacking instincts to match situations, and contribute where opportunities arise.

Final paragraph

Niyo has described the move as a dream step and says he will commit to hard work and continued improvement as he settles into his new environment, with the practical aim of helping Veres Rivne while furthering his own development in European football.
