Gaborone United secured the FNB Botswana Premier League title with three matches to spare after second-placed Jwaneng Galaxy failed to win on April 25, 2026. The draw between Jwaneng Galaxy and Sua Flamingos made Gaborone United champions despite a 2-0 defeat to Mafic on the same day. The victory marks Gaborone United’s eighth league crown and cements their status as the country’s second most successful club behind Township Rollers.

Title-clinching scenario in Gaborone

On April 25, 2026, Jwaneng Galaxy were held to a 0-0 draw by Sua Flamingos, a result that mathematically ended the title race in Gaborone United’s favour. Gaborone United sat on 65 points from 27 matches while Jwaneng had 55 points with three games remaining, leaving an unbridgeable gap. The combination of Jwaneng’s dropped points and Gaborone’s earlier season consistency allowed the visitors to lift the trophy without needing a match-day celebration.

Gaborone United’s defeat to Mafic on the same day did little to dampen celebrations in the capital, as the club had accumulated enough points over the season to make the title secure. That result underlines the margin of their success: the championship was won through sustained performance rather than a single decisive fixture. The team can now focus on finishing the season strongly and targeting a domestic double.

How the season unfolded for the champions

Gaborone United built their campaign on a balance of steady results and timely contributions from mid-season signings and established squad members. The team accumulated 65 points from 27 league matches, a tally that reflects a combination of wins and a disciplined defensive record. That consistency is what ultimately put them beyond reach of the chasing pack.

Key moments included a run of positive results during the middle of the campaign and strategic recruitment in January and February that strengthened the squad. Even fixtures in which the club did not pick up maximum points were offset by rivals dropping points at critical times. By the time April arrived, Gaborone United had created the cushion needed to turn a tense title fight into a celebratory conclusion.

Aubrey Amseb’s midseason impact

Namibian forward Aubrey Amseb joined Gaborone United midway through the season from Young African and quickly established himself as an influential presence. In his first ten matches after signing, Amseb recorded six goal contributions, including five assists and one goal, which helped him secure a regular place in the starting XI. His creativity and set-piece threat have been particularly valuable in breaking down tight defences.

Amseb is no stranger to the Botswana Premier League, having first moved to the country in February 2022 when he signed for Masitaoka alongside Ivan Kamberipa. His career since has been cyclical, with moves to Jwaneng Galaxy, a return to Namibia with African Stars, a stint at Township Rollers, and a brief spell abroad with Moroccan second-division side Olympique Khouribga in February 2025. After returning to Young African and playing the first half of the domestic season there, Amseb’s second return to Botswana proved decisive in Gaborone United’s title push.

Ivan Kamberipa’s leadership and consistency

Ivan Kamberipa has provided the defensive backbone and leadership that complemented Amseb’s attacking influence throughout the season. Kamberipa’s trajectory mirrors Amseb’s in part: he moved to Botswana in 2022 to join Masitaoka from African Stars and was entrusted with the captain’s armband within seven months, demonstrating his leadership qualities. After a season that included the sale of Masitaoka’s top-flight status and a transfer to Orapa United in 2023, Kamberipa signed for Gaborone United in July 2025.

Since his arrival at Gaborone United, Kamberipa has been ever-present across the campaign, featuring in every match and delivering the consistency managers prize. His experience across multiple Botswana clubs and his familiarity with the domestic game have helped stabilise Gaborone United’s back line. The defensive discipline he brought to the squad was a key factor in the club amassing the points needed for the title.

Club legacy and historical context

Gaborone United’s eighth league title moves the club clear as the second most successful in Botswana’s modern era, trailing only Township Rollers, who have collected 16 league championships. This latest trophy reaffirms Gaborone United’s place among the elite of Botswana football and underscores the club’s ability to rebuild and reassert itself. The achievement also enhances the club’s attractiveness to players seeking both domestic success and potential exposure in regional competitions.

The pathway to this title combined shrewd recruitment, an adaptable tactical approach from the coaching staff, and the emergence of influential performers at key moments. The championship will also have financial and commercial implications for the club as it prepares for the final fixtures of the season and for next year’s planning cycle. For supporters, the title offers vindication of patience and a return to the top tier of domestic honours.

Cup ambitions and remaining fixtures

With the league secured, Gaborone United still have unfinished business in the Orange FA Cup, where they have reached the quarter-finals after a late long-range free-kick by Aubrey Amseb sealed progression. The club are set to face Township Rollers in the quarter-final, a matchup that offers a high-stakes local rivalry and a chance for further silverware. Completing a domestic double remains a live possibility and a priority for the playing squad and coaching staff.

The remaining league fixtures will provide opportunities to fine-tune tactics and to give minutes to squad members ahead of the cup ties and the off-season. The club’s management will also be assessing squad needs, contract situations and potential reinforcements to ensure competitiveness next season. For now, the focus will be on maintaining form and momentum while preparing for a challenging cup tie against a long-time rival.

Gaborone United’s title offers both a reward for season-long planning and a platform for further ambition, driven by a mix of homegrown stability and targeted recruitment.

The league triumph on April 25, 2026, capped a campaign that blended experience, leadership and decisive contributions from mid-season arrivals, and now gives Gaborone United a clear springboard into domestic cup competition and planning for the season ahead.
